Storm’s Shoemaker repeats as Section IV Champion
WHITNEY POINT – Unadilla Valley’s Bailey Shoemaker returns to the New York State Golf Championship tournament after capturing the Section IV title on Tuesday, May 21 at the Soaring Eagles Golf Course in Whitney Point.
Aiming for a 1-under-par 70 score, the same score she shot a year ago to win the sectional crown, Shoemaker battled the windy conditions during her round.
While she didn’t shot the score she wanted, the UV eighth-grader finished the 18 holes with a 3-over-par 74 to top the runner-up – Emily Gresham of Chenango Forks – by six shots.
Shoemaker will now take a shot at the New York State Championship at Deerfield Country Club in Brockport on June 1 and 2. She will have a practice round on May 31 to prepare for the course.
A season ago, Shoemaker made an amazing comeback to finish the runner-up at the state tournament. Her second round score of 65 at Bethpage Yellow set the New York State record for the lowest round recorded and brought her back from trailing the leader by seven strokes.
The Storm’s medalist, who plays in the fall on the boys’ team for UV, was able to turn her focus on the Section IV Championship tournament after getting her college decision off her back prior to the start.
On April 30, the eighth-grader verbally committed to continue her playing career post high school days at the University of Southern California, the nation’s top-ranked team this season.
Shoemaker’s commitment to USC won’t be official until she signs a National Letter of Intent as a senior, which is in four years. Her verbal commitment to the university comes after the Trojans’ program offered her a scholarship to attend the school and become a NCAA Division-I student-athlete. She had the choice between USC, Texas and Vanderbilt – all part of her top three list.
Shoemaker sported a white USC cap during her Section IV championship round.
In two weeks, the eighth-grader will take on one of the three courses at Deerfield Country Club. The field she will be competing against will include the defending champion Melanie Green of Medina.
