Oxford Rt. 12 bridge to be demolished in year-long replacement project
OXFORD – Traffic is now being diverted over a temporary bridge along State Highway 12 over Bowman Creek, just south of the Village of Oxford, as crews work on a long-term replacement.
The New York State Department of Transportation has begun the year-long process of demolishing the old bridge and building a new one, in the meantime motorists will use a temporary one built nearby.

According to Chenango County Emergency Operations Center Representative A Wesley Jones, this project is located a quarter mile north of the intersection with South Oxford Bridge Road.
“Contract crews will be replacing the bridge, and during this time all traffic will continue across the temporary bridge,” said Jones. “Very minor slow downs can be expected due to the reduced speed.”
According to a Don Pencek, Representative from New York State’s Department of Transportation the project is expected to scheduled for completion in June of 2020.
“It’s a completely bridge replacement,” said Pencek. “Not only will the bridge be replaced, but the road will be realigned where it enters Route 12.”
He said the Department of Transportation engineer determined that the bridge was in need of replacement after doing an inspection and discovering that sections of the bridge were outdated.
“The engineer said its an aging structure that was built in 1959,” said Pencek. “He noted that it had outdated bridge rails that were due to be updated and that the cost of maintenance made bridge replacement a more viable option.”
In the meantime, he said, drivers may use a temporary bridge that’s been installed near the construction site. He added that the temporary bridge will remain at the site until the construction is completed.
