New York State Championship track meet set for this weekend
MIDDLETOWN – For the next two days, the Middletown High School track and field areas will see the best of the best throughout New York battling for the state championship medal as the NYSPHSAA Championship meet takes place.
Several runners and jumpers from the local area will attempt to bring home the 2019 state champion title in an aray of events.
Norwich’s Gawronski brother and sister duo are set to duke it out against the rest of the field in the 400 meter dash for Gabe and the 400 meter hurdles for Katie.
Gabe, who ran a time of 49.94 at the Section IV State Qualifier, is scheduled to be in the final heat as he sits in the eighth-seed. The top time in the event this year was registered by Reese Casinelli of Newfane at 49.12 – .82 seconds faster than Gabe’s time. The two will more than likely be on the track at the same time.
Sister Katie was awarded the 11th seed for the 400 meter hurdles, an event the junior participated in at the state championships a year ago. Her 1:06.25 set the school record for the second time she has taken on the event as a member of the Purple Tornado squad.
Also from Norwich is sprinting youngster Miranda Cole. Cole, a freshman on the team, will take on the 100 and 200 meter events as well as the 4x100 meter relay with teammates Angela Carlson, Riley Marsh and Hailey Colabelli. Carlson, Marsh and Colabelli have the state meet experience in the event as the three were joined by former Tornado Caroline Stewart in the 2018.
Both the Purple Tornado 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams on the boys side of the meet are seeded inside the top eight of New York State’s Division-2. The 4x100 meter team is made up of speedsters David Berger, Eric Conant, Nik Barber and Griffin Mills. The foursome is the fourth-seed for the preliminaries.
Mills and Conant will join Gabe Gawronski and Noah Bufalini in the 4x400 meter relay event, an event in which the team is currently seeded sixth.
All three of Norwich’s relay teams do have a shot to medal as the top six are awarded. If the place within the top six, they will return for a chance to win a New York State Federation title.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Owen Rodriguez is running in the 400 meter hurdles, attempting to medal in his final event as a Marauder. Rodriguez – a three-sport athlete for S-E – won the Section III championship in the event this season and qualified for states with a time of 57.11 seconds. He is seeded 13th.
The Bobcats’ Erica Selfridge will partcipate in the both the long and triple jump events. As the only representative from the county to take part in the field events. Selfridge’s distance of 17 feet-4.5 inches in the long jump lands her a 19th-seed while she sits as the 12th best in the state with 35 feet-5 inches in the triple-jump.
The NYSPHSAA Championship meet starts Friday at 11 a.m. Some events will have final results after the day is concluded but others will need to be completed on Saturday afternoon. All Federation events will take place on Day 2 in Middletown.
