Opioid Justice Team to meet in Norwich

NORWICH – A law firm representing a panel of experts, the Opioid Justice Team, has invited parents, guardians, and caregivers from Chenango County to a town-hall style meeting on the drug crisis and its effect on local families.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, June 21, in the Norwich Family YMCA's Community Room. Event representatives said the meeting will feature opioid experts Celeste Brustowicz and Donald Creadore along with other local partners.
Representatives added that there are more prescription drug abusers in the U.S. today than any new users of illegal drugs, and the most innocent victims are opioid-dependent babies being born to women who were using drugs while pregnant: an opioid-dependent infant is born in America every 19 minutes.
This meeting comes after recent investigation by the Chenango County Sheriff's Office seized approximately 220 packets of heroin and nearly $2,000 in cash, believed to be laced with fentanyl.
"Sheriff’s deputies and detectives then located a pouch containing over 220 packets heroin that was possibly mixed with fentanyl between the seats. Over $1,900 in cash was located on the defendants when they were taken into custody along with more heroin," said Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr.
The Opioid Justice Team will discuss issues like these and a medical-legal partnership taking the lead in America on behalf of families struggling with prescription opioid abuse, especially those involving children born to opioid-using parents.
According to Presenter Celeste Brustowicz, women are more likely to be prescribed opioids than men, and two-thirds of women prescribed opioids are of child-bearing age.
Attorney Don Creadore said families are invited to this town hall meeting to learn about steps they can take now on behalf of their loved ones and how to prepare for the long-term costs of caring for children born to opioid-dependent parents.
"This is an opportunity to discuss without judgment the scope of this issue, what the impact on families in New York are right now, and the steps every family should consider taking to protect themselves from the costs associated with this drug-industry manufactured crisis," said Ms. Brustowicz.
According to their website, "The Opioid Justice Team is a group of highly skilled attorneys who have engaged with doctors and civic leaders fighting to end our nation’s opioid epidemic by identifying real solutions to the crisis. What sets our team apart is our commitment to our clients not only to obtain compensation for their damages, but to advocate for a comprehensive settlement that will address the root causes of the opioid crisis and eliminate the systemic conditions that allow it to exist. We’re about justice, relief, and answers to the short and long-term challenges of America’s unprecedented prescription opioid addiction problem."
The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served. Early responses are encouraged as seating space is limited at each meeting. For more information or to RSVP, contact cbrustowicz@sch-llc.com or Jessica at (504) 399-0009.
