DA: Norwich man stabbed victim over loose change
NORWICH – A Norwich man is facing felony assault charges after he allegedly stabbed a victim who confronted him for stealing loose change from a parked car.
Gary L. Nichols Jr., 39, of 29 Court St. in Norwich, was charged with first-degree assault, third-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, petit larceny, trespass, and first-degree escape.
Chenango County District Attorney Michael Ferrarese said, "This was a petit larceny that turned into a vicious assault all due to the defendant's actions, and additional charges may come after a thorough review of all of the evidence."
Ferrarese said the two victims were hurt after attempting to stop Nichols from fleeing the area, before police arrived. The stabbing reportedly occurred while a victim was attempting to stop the defendant from fleeing.
According to a court document, at approximately 2:15 a.m. Saturday on Plymouth Street in the City of Norwich, Nichols was caught stealing loose change from a blue Cadillac by the vehicle's owner.
