SHERBURNE – The Roger’s Environmental Education Center in Sherburne is hosting another year of summer camp, providing children with environmental knowledge and experience in nature.
Rogers Environmental Education Center is an organization located at 2721 State Highway 80 in Sherburne, dedicated to enhancing environmental awareness and appreciation of the natural world. It offers 600 acres of a variety of habitats for the walker, bird watcher, photographer, snowshoer, or cross-country skier. Trails traverse woodlands, meadows, wetlands, plantations, and farm fields.
According to Roger’s Center Executive Director Simon Solomon, the camp educates approximately 150 children each year ages 3 to 11, from July 1 to August 16.
“When I was growing up in this area, there wasn’t this kind of opportunity for youth to come out and learn about nature,” said Solomon. “We began the process of starting this program in 2011, and because health department certified in 2015.”
He said the camp is run by around eight counselor, and all staff are first aid trained.
“We want to provide the campers with a safe but interesting learning environment, so most of our camp time is spent enjoying our facility and the outdoors,” said Solomon. “We like to hear that children are going home and talking about precipitation or about wildlife.”
He said the center is looking to expand in the near future, bringing more exhibits and new programs for both children and adults to enjoy, but is working on garnering financial support.
“We hope to have a variety of new initiatives for everyone to enjoy in the near future,” said Solomon. “Things like new exhibits and programs help bring new life and a broader education to the people who come here, so depending on financial backing we’re going to look at those areas first.”
He said in the meantime, the center is free to visit, and programs are available for those who are interested in getting more hands on with their environmental education.
For those who are interested in learning more about the center, or the variety of activities and programs they have available, may visit friendsofrogers.org/ for more information. Those who wish to learn more about the center and the surrounding property may visit dec.ny.gov/education/1831.html.
