Building young workforce a key focus for new Commerce Chenango president
NORWICH – Attracting and retaining young people is something newly announced Commerce Chenango President and CEO Kerri Green said is a crux of her agenda.
Green, settling into her first week on the job, introduced herself to Chenango County's planning and economic development committee Thursday with the purpose of networking with local leaders and touching on crucial economic issues, including the retention of young people in the area.
“I think it starts in high school – getting them to be a part of the community and getting them involved so that they might leave and go to college, but then come back,” said Green. “We can make those connections at the high school level.”
Green said she hopes to work with local businesses to someday implement programs tailored to the needs of youth and employment.
“It's not all about college,” she added. “Some people choose military; some people choose to go straight to the workforce. I think there's a lot of connections that can be made there as well.”
Other matters Green alluded to include the skills gap, employer needs, and the county's shortage of public transportation and childcare services.
