County DA’s and Public Defender’s offices likely to relocate

NORWICH – Changes to state and federal laws are forcing the Chenango County District Attorney's Office and Public Defender's Office to look at a new location within the Eaton Center in Norwich.

Both offices are currently housed on the second floor of the Eaton Center on Conkey Avenue, but county officials say a move to another floor, where there's more space, is imminent.

“They'll outgrow the space that they're in at the Eaton Center,” said County Board Clerk RC Wooford. “For the time being, we're working on new offices for them in the Eaton Center on the fourth floor.”

The move will come with increased costs. County officials hope to pick up grant funds to help offset costs of the public defender's office. The district attorney's office, however, will likely be paid by local tax dollars.

While plans to move have yet to be finalized, officials expect the relocation to happen soon.
