NORWICH – Two individuals were arrested Tuesday after they fled police during a traffic stop, resulting in a short car chase and a crash in the Town of Norwich.
The chase began on East Main Street in the City of Norwich. Police followed the vehicle into the Town of Norwich where it drove into a ditch on Burdick Medbury Road. One occupant was arrested on drug charges and the other had pending parole warrant.
Randy L. Condon Jr., 34, of Sidney was charged with third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle, first-degree reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and was also arrested on a bench warrant out of the New York State Department of Parole.
Kellie M. Gregory, 31, of Unadilla was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
According to Norwich Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Burlison, Norwich officers attempted to stop a motor vehicle at approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, on East Main Street in the City of Norwich.
"The situation started off as a simple traffic infraction," said Burlison. "But the driver had parole warrants for absconding, and the passenger had narcotics."
Burlison said the vehicle sped away, and there was a pursuit that ended on Burdick Medbury Road in the Town of Norwich.
"The driver, Condon, attempted to elude the police but ended up driving the vehicle into a ditch," he said. "The driver and a passenger of the vehicle were both taken into custody at that time."
He said that fortunately the incident didn't happen during a peak driving time.
"Less of the public was put at risk because of the time of night," said Burlison. "Had this happened during the day when more people are on the road, things may have been considerably more dangerous for everyone involved."
He said instead of just returning to jail on the warrant, Condon is now facing an additional felony charge because of his actions.
Condon is scheduled to appear in Norwich City Court today.
