Gage’s third set win secures match victory for Lady Tornado

NORWICH – Erica Gage sealed the fourth and final point for the Norwich Purple Lady Tornado to claim their first win of the season over Windsor 4-2 Thursday morning.
Gage, who was making her varsity singles match debut Thursday, battled for the win. Playing against Windsor’s Sophia Kabat, Gage feel in the first set 4-6.
Responding in the second set, the Norwich senior won 6-3 and forced a third set tiebreaker where she controlled and took the match point with a 6-1 set win.
Natalie Benenati (6-2, 6-3) and Logan Fredenburg (6-1, 6-2) also captured the Tornado two more points in the singles line-up, both commanding their matches and winning in two straight sets.
Norwich’s first doubles pairing of Brooke Diehl and Chloe Glanville added to the team victory, beating Windsor with solid teamwork and net play. Diehl and Glanville allowed their Black Knight opponents – Emma Llaguno and Chelsea Landers – to win just five games in the two-set match.
Falling in their season opener were Emma Brooks on the singles side and the doubles team of Jolei Powell and Autumn Clum. All three players made their first appearance on the varsity team for the Tornado with Brooks listed as Norwich’s second singles player while the duo are the No. 2 doubles team.
The Tornado netters will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Chenango Valley on Tuesday, September 3. The Southern Tier Athletic Conference (STAC) match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
