SHERBURNE – The Unadilla Valley Storm beat the Central Valley Academy Thunder, 2-1 to win the Sherburne-Earlville Labor Day Weekend Soccer Tournament after trailing 1-0 early due to a penalty kick conversion by the Thunder’s Keegan Case in the first five minutes of play
The Storm, however, rallied back.
Attempt after attempt, UV’s shots sailed just wide of the net. Keeping the pressure on the CVA’s defense for the remaining moments of the first half, Unadilla Valley’s Devon Fairchild brought a ball up the right side of the pitch and netted the game’s equalizer – and his first goal of the season – with four minutes showing on the scoreboard.
A second half that saw many opportunities for both sides, was only capitalized by the Storm as Dylan Nichols tapped an end-line pass from Fairchild for the game winner.
The Storm defense held strong, keeping the Thunder to their lone goal from the first half. UV’s head coach Ryan Houck credited the scoreless final 21 minutes to the solid play from defensive players Cameron Osborne, Shawn Contreras, Caleb Parker and keeper Brandon Kneale.
Sherburne-Earlville and Unadilla Valley both opened their 2019 campaigns in a intra-county matchup for the first round of the tournament. Coming down to a penalty kick shootout to determine who advanced into the championship game, the Storm’s soccer club advanced for a chance at the tournament crown on Nichols and UV’s final attempt.
The Storm’s senior tallied the first goal of the contest 17 minutes into action after taking a ball from teammate Owen Hill into a 1-on-1 situation with Sheburne-Earlville’s keeper John Oley. Nichols was able to put it past the Marauders’ goalie for the 1-0 lead.
As the Marauders consistently applied pressure in the UV defensive half, the reward came with Nathan Morgan’s successful penalty kick at the 23 minute mark of the first half to even the score.
S-E’s head coach Michael Rodriguez stated an adjustment by the Maraduers’ opponent in the second half voided his team’s pressure.
The second half as well as the overtime sessions fell scoreless for both teams as each team failed to generate a winning goal, sending the game into a shootout overtime.
The Marauders won the toss and elected to put the pressure on the Storm by going first. The two teams opened the shootout 2-for-2 in the first two rounds. In the third set of attempts, Kneale made a big save for UV to maintain the tie.
With the chance to take the advantage, Unadilla Valley midfielder Skot Lindholm sailed one over the cross bar, keeping the score the same.
Kneale came up big again in the fourth round, making another save and Nichols fired the go-ahead chance past Marauders’ goalie Zach Trass.
With one shot remaining, S-E’s Morgan went too high as it bounced the crossbar to seal the victory for the Storm.
The Sherburne-Earlville Marauders then faced the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (VVS) Red Devils in the consolation game.
S-E held their opponent to a scoreless first half but VVS took control in the second with the Devlis’ Jake Pawlika scoring from 30 yards out to beat the keeper.
Sam Donnelly struck next for the Red Devils as a scramble in front of the goal following direct kick VVS’s second goal. Lucas Croft wrapped up the scoring with a penalty kick goal.
Jacob Sutherland and Gabe Irwin were named to the All-Tourney team for Sherburne-Earlville as Fairchild, Kneale and Osborne received nods for the Storm. Nichols was award the tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Jake Pawlika and Gavin Miller were added All-Tournament selections for the Red Devils.
Following the tournament, UV suffered their first loss of the season to Greene 6-1 while the Marauders continue to prepare for their first division game of the year on the road against Adirondack on Tuesday, September 10.
