NORWICH – The score in Norwich’s match against Chenango Forks Monday afternoon was closer than appears with the Lady Tornado being on the losing end of a 5-2 final.
Second, third and fourth singles matches between Norwich and the visiting Blue Devils all went three sets with the Tornado coming away with just one point from Emma Brooks win.
Brooks overcame the 5-7 loss in the first set to capture the next two by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. Her head coach Nikki Brooks said Emma’s match win came due to the well struck and well timed baseline shots. The Lady Tornado freshman improved to 2-2 on the season.
Moving to a perfect 4-0 at first singles was Norwich’s Natalie Benenati, winning both sets 6-4. The Tornado head coach noted Benenati overcame many long rallies that ended with well constructed points.
Logan Fredenburg and Erica Gage both started their matches strong, winning their first sets 6-2 and 7-5 respectively, but neither were quite able to down their opponents. Coach Brooks commented that each played hard, hustled and fought for every point during the match.
“I really look forward to playing [Chenango Forks] again,” said Coach Brooks. “On another day, we can certainly get a different result and hopefully that result will be adding a mark in the win column.”
Norwich’s next match is scheduled for Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Seton Catholic.
