Joseph Maiurano talks about his candidacy for City of Norwich Mayor

NORWICH - Joseph P. Maiurano, lifelong resident of Natoli Avenue in the City of Norwich, has officially announced his candidacy for Mayor of the City of Norwich.

Maiurano is running on the Independent line of “Norwich Pride” in the General Election on Tuesday, November 5.

He has an Associate’s Degree from SUNY Broome, then attended Canisius College in Buffalo before receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary and Physical Education from SUNY Cortland.

Maiurano served as the 5th Ward Alderman from 2004 to 2006 and mayor of City of Norwich from 2006 to 2015.

“I have the desire, and commitment to be effective as mayor” said Maiurano, “I want to see the city as a place for businesses to invest and people to invest in residential homes in our neighborhoods.”

The deterioration of the neighborhoods, public safety, as well as lack of development and investment within the City of Norwich are among the primary concerns said Maiurano.

“If elected mayor, my goal is to develop and reinstate community improvement projects, such as the sidewalk replacement program, paint rebate programs for residential home owners,” he said. “There will also be a focus on the acquisition of ‘Main Street’ and Restore New York Grants to revitalize our community.”

Maiurano believes the current code structure must be enforced in order to clean up the blighted properties in the city.

He said he is not only focused on the current state local affairs, but wants to look ahead and develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure that the City of Norwich can once again welcome in new commerce.

“I will be working closely with the department heads, developing relationships with elected officials, and local entrepreneur’s and develop short and long term goals to secure our city’s future,” he said.

Maiurano also acknowledged the many challenges in the current state of the city, but said “there are also many hidden treasures that make this community a great place to live. We must build upon the good, so that the City of Norwich can be a destination point within Central New York. We need to market the city as a destination for young professionals and their families. I believe we as a city can do better.”

Maiurano plans on making himself available and meeting with all city residents over the next several weeks.
