Trojans tie defending state champions 1-1

Bobcats and Marauders win; OV falls by a goal

ONEONTA – Meeting in the Strong as Heck Soccer Festival, host at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta, the Greene Trojans boys club tied the Westhill Warriors – 2018 Class B New York State Champions –1-1 after a scoreless first half.
Greene struck first on the scoreboard with a Scout McCumiskey goal as 10:02 remained in the contest. McCumiskey fielded a long through ball distributed by teammate Calob Davenport and ripped a shot into the lower side net, out of Westhill keeper Ian Prebish’s reach.
The Trojans held onto the lead in the back-and-forth battle between the two teams until the final 1:36 in the game due defensive header miscue. Westhill’s Jackson Powers then collected the ball to go one-on-one with Greene’s keeper Nick Shoemaker and put the ball into the net.
The Warriors nearly recorded the go ahead goal with 32 seconds left on the clock, however Shoemaker came up big with his third big save of the match, preserving the tie with the defending state champions.
The 11th ranked team in Class C played on Friday also, defeating Walton 1-0.
Outshooting the Warriors 25-1 in a 2018 Midstate Athletic Conference championship rematch, the Trojans’ Nolan Butler was able to break the nil-nil tie with four minutes left in the contest. His unassisted goal kept Greene’s undefeated record intact.
Shoemaker made one save in Friday’s contest.
Greene, now 5-0-1, travels to B-G on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. game.

SHERBURNE – The Marauders finally returned to winning column as the S-E offense did enough to get by a refreshed and feisty Mount Markham Mustang team. The young Mustang roster, who Sherburne-Earlville head coach Michael Rodriguez stated is, “full of potential,” suffered their first league loss to the Marauders 1-0 Friday afternoon.
Returning to the Sherburne-Earlville lineup from injury was senior Gabe Irwin. His return was what the Marauders’ offense needed as Irwin’s precision pass to Brogan Winton split the Mustang defense and sent his teammate on the offensive attack.
Winton buried his shot past Mt. Markham’s goal keeper Alex Arkema in the first half.
Through the second half, the S-E defense to hold on for the win as senior sweeper Noah Posson navigated a nearly new defense due to many injuries on the Marauders back line.
S-E’s keeper John Oley recorded his first varsity shutout and helped keep the Marauders’ home record against league opponents perfect this season.
Sherburne-Earlville (3–4–1, 3–2–0) take on Adirondack at home on Tuesday. Game is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Bainbridge-Guilford 2, Sidney 1
SIDNEY – Bainbridge-Guilford’s Ryan Porter has continued his hot start to the season as he scored two goals against Sidney Friday afternoon, leading his team to a 2-1 Midstate Athletic Conference victory over the Warriors.
Porter received an assist from Garrett O’Hara and put it into the back of the net with 14 second left in the first half, tying the game at 1-1 before the intermission.
Sidney’s Bryan Agustin gave the Warriors the lead on their home pitch with 10:20 remaining in the first half.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Porter tallied his second. This time taking a pass from Owen Walley to score the eventual game-winner for the Bobcats.
B-G’s Zach Graham came away with four saves in the game, prevserving the win for the visiting team.
Bainbridge-Guilford takes on No. 11 in New York State’s Class C state rankings, the Greene Trojans. The Bobcats host at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

OTSELIC – In a battle homecoming weekend for Otselic Valley, Madsion was able to put one in the net, securing the road win Friday night.
Madison’s Husdon Idzi scored late in the second half of the game and the Vikings were unable to take on the equalizer.
Keeping OV (0-5, 1-6) in the game was the stand out play were Carter Smith, Daren Grabow, and Dakota Hackett as Vikings’ head coach Jake Preston noted the three seemed to be all over the field and were in the right place at the right time.
Otselic Valley seeks their first league win of the season against McGraw on the road Monday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
