NORWICH – The Norwich Tornado soccer club earned the first win of 2019 as they took down Gilbertsville-Mount Upton 1-0 on Monday night.
The two team met on Norwich’s pitch under the lights as the Tornado hosted senior night, honoring five soon-to-be graduates – Aidan Sullivan, Ebin Lewis, Cameron Lowenstein Tyler Shimer and Tyler Hagen.
Despite the many chances by both squads in the first half, the score at the break was 0-0. Within in the final 10 minutes of the half, the Purple Tornado attempted several shots after a course of good looks as well as scrambles in front of their goal. However, the Raiders of GMU held up on a defense and were able to reach intermission without a score on the board.
The second half got underway and once again Norwich and Gilbertsville-Mount Upton both had changes to change the score and give their team the lead.
With 27:31 left in the contest, Purple Tornado Miguel Ferreria booted a ball from 35 yards out. As the ball was sailing through the air, GMU’s keeper was waiting to make a play on it.
