CHENANGO COUNTY – Residents all throughout Chenango County suffered from power outages, downed trees, and flooding after officials said the area received approximately two inches of rain in less than three hours.
According to Chenango County Emergency Operation Center Manager A. Wesley Jones, areas in the northern and western part of the county battled with the most rain yesterday, with multiple roads closed and individuals in the City of Norwich forced out of their homes and into a temporary shelter.
Jones said some residents on Prentice Street were forced to leave their homes after water filled the area. The flood waters also cut power and caused other problems with utilities.
“We got anywhere between 1 to 3 inches of rain yesterday,” said Jones. “There are numerous roads in the Town of Smyrna, in Plymouth, McDonough, Pharsalia that are closed, and we’ve also got Prentice Street in the City of Norwich that is still closed."
He said there is a temporary shelter set up at the First Baptist Church for the individuals living in the area, as electric and gas is turned off in a section of the city.
“At approximately 12:55 a.m. we received a call of a man trapped in a car after attempting to drive through standing water,” said Jones. “Responders extricated him through the roof of the vehicle.”
Jones said some businesses were forced to closed down, with reports of water in some commercial buildings as well.
Jones added there are various power outages throughout the county, and according to a report from NYSEG 458 households are currently without power.
“As people are driving through the county, particularly on secondary roadways, don’t drive through standing water, report it and find another way around,” he added.
