Contested races too close to call on election night

CHENANGO – The unofficial election results from Tuesday night showed no candidate with a clear victory in the City of Norwich mayoral election.

On election day, Shawn Sastri received 433 votes for City of Norwich mayor, Jill Osterhout-Kraft received 394, former mayor Joe Maiurano received 350 and incumbent Mayor Christine Carnrike received 228.

The board of elections will process absentee ballots in the coming days. There are still 174 absentee ballots yet to be counted in the city's races.

Contested Common Council seats for Ward 3 Alderman: Nancy Allaire, 221; Scott Sutton, 165.

For Ward 5 Alderman: David Zieno, 121; Jennifer Olds, 72.

Several other races, including those in Guilford, had significant advance voting, absentee ballots and write-ins. These votes have complicated the final results and an official count for write-in candidates will not be confirmed for several days.

The Town of Guilford board saw a write-in campaign launched by a number of candidates over concerns to build some of the largest windmills in the country in Guilford.

The board of elections released only advanced voting information Tuesday for Guildford, meaning ballots cast Tuesday and absentee votes still needed to be counted. There are also a significant number of write-in votes yet to be determined.
