Meet the Norwich mayor-elect, Shawn Sastri
Shawn Sastri, newly elected Mayor of Norwich, will be sworn into office in January. Sastri, a lifetime resident of Norwich, is passionate about hearing the needs of the residents and taking action to build a stronger community.
NORWICH – In January, Shawn Sastri will be sworn into office as mayor of the City of Norwich.
Sastri, who currently works for CZ-USA, was born and raised in Norwich.
He attended Norwich schools and graduated from SUNY Cobleskill in 1992.
He currently lives here with his wife, Karen, and three kids, Gehrig, Jackson, and Mikayla, who also attend Norwich schools.
Sastri said he has a passion for wanting to improve the city of Norwich for the last ten years.
“I was tossing the idea around with some friends, and I think it was at the end of December last year that I was like, man, I should run for mayor. One of my friends was like, ya know you've been talking about it for awhile, why don't you do it? We always talk about different ideas that can be done and I decided to run and I did not expect to be in this position.” Sastri said.
Although Sastri does not have a background in politics, he does have a passion for giving back to the community. Sastri has volunteered at the Norwich YMCA since the 80's. From reffing basketball games, to timing Dolphins swim team races, Sastri has always found a way to be involved with the Y's programs.
Sastri, along with New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter and Brian Burton, also started an annual comedy fundraising event five years ago. The event supports community members and organizations who are impacted by diabetes.
“Six years ago Terry's mom passed away and my oldest son is a diabetic. I reached out to Terry and told him I wanted to do a fundraising event. So Terry and I got together, brought in Brian Burton, who works at NBT bank and is the God father of my son, and we decided to do a comedy night.”
The comedy nights are held at Canasawacta Country Club and typically take place in March or April of each year. Sastri said that the money raised at the event goes to supporting programs at the Norwich YMCA, local community members with diabetes medical cost, Service Pharmacy to cover medical supplies cost, and Camp Aspire which is a traditional summer camp adapted for children with diabetes.
Taking office Sastri said his priority was to learn the needs of the community. “I have a lot of ideas, but I don't have the answers. My thought process right now is I'm currently setting up meetings with department heads, getting to know them and their position and how they run their department.” Sastri also plans on meeting with influential community members such as Martin Dietrich, of NBT Bank, and Commerce Chenango President Kerri Green.
When asked about being mayor, Sastri replied, “I feel the mayor position is a leader position. I feel like I would be a voice for the Norwich community. The downfall I have is I like to please everyone. So I have to really think about the city residents and do whats best for the community. I want to go into the position open minded. Before I ran it's so funny how I felt like I knew what was going on with the city, as a taxpayer looking out. Now that I'm involved its like a 180.”
Sastri feels the community is just as passionate about improving Norwich as he is. “My favorite thing about the City of Norwich is the people are very caring and passionate about our community. More than I ever realized. Even when I was knocking on doors and I would come across supporters for other candidates, they were more than willing to talk to me and they were very passionate about the community. Everyone knows everyone, its a small town. I like that everyone supports the community and community events.”
Sastri would like the community to know that he understands the work it will take to be the mayor of Norwich. “I always get the comment, you've got a lot of work ahead of you. And I tell people, I know. It's not like I woke up one day and decided to run for mayor. I know the hard work its gonna take and I'm willing to do it. There's going to be a lot of sacrifices and I've talked to my family, their very supportive.”
Sastri anticipates a smooth transition with the help of current mayor, Christine Carnrike. “She's been great. Months ago she reached out to me and we've been in communication since.” Sastri jokes that the hardest part of the transition so far is simply the change in title. “The hardest part for me is I want to be called Shawn. There are people who are already calling me mayor, and it just hasn't sunk in yet.”
