SIDNEY – The Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville opened the 2019-2020 season with an overtime win over host Sidney Tuesday night. Outscoring the Warriors 16-5 in the extra minutes of basketball, S-E picked up the non-conference road win.
Sherburne-Earlville, who was lead by Noah Posson’s 16 points, found away to limit Sidney’s Jon Palmatier in overtime. Palmatier led all scorers with 25 points, knocking down three 3-point field goals for nine of his total.
The host Warriors took a 19-13 lead after the first quarter but the Marauders held Sidney to just nine points in the second, tying the game at 28-28 at the halftime break.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for the second half, each matching point totals in the third and fourth quarters to tie the game at 60-60 at the end of regulation.
It was in the overtime session where S-E took over, using the free throw line to capture the victory. The Marauders went 9-for-10 at the foul line and used a 3-pointer by Taylor Grymkowski along with two buckets from the inside by Troy Fleming to outlast their opponents.
Gabe Irwin of Sherburne-Earlville went 5-for-6 at the free throw line in the extra stanza, count for five of his 12 points. Teammates Bobby Hill and Fleming each finished with 10 points apiece. Hill hit two of S-E’s six 3-point field goals while Preston Eaves added another two.
Palmatier totaled nine made field goals to come away with his game-high 25 and teammate Devon Chabot recorded 16 points in the loss. Liam Matthews finished with 11 points for the Warriors.
The Marauders (1-0) prepare to host Unadilla Valley in the first round of their annual Tip-Off Tournament. S-E will take on the Storm at 7:30 and playing in the game prior are Vernon-Verona-Sherrill and Cooperstown. The first game of the tournament tips off at 6 p.m.
The winners of the two games will meet Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the championship while the other two teams will play in the consolation game at 6 p.m.

Newark Valley 49, Oxford 33
OXFORD – The Blackhawks fell to the visiting Cardinals of Newark Valley despite the strong second half effort of Dylan Kittredge and Pleasie Hughey III. Oxford made four 3-point field goals – three by Kittredge – but it was the 13 points by Newark Valley’s Donavan BeBeil that pushed the Cardinals to the 49-33 Tuesday road win.
Newark Valley outscored the Blackhawks 24-13 in the first half and used that cushion in the second half. Alex Smith and Nick Cirello kept Oxford within reach as they went into the intermission trailing by 11 points.
Smith, who led the Blackhawks in the scoring column, had seven first half points while Cirello scored all six of his points scored in between the first two quarters of play.
Kittredge’s three made field goals from behind the arc all came in the final quarter of play and Hughey and Smith combined to score Oxford’s 11 points in the third – seven points scored by Hughey – the most scored by the Blackhawks in an eight minute span.
The Cardinals’ Riley Malone chipped in 10 points to help his team to the victory.
Oxford (0-1) hosts Franklin on Thursday at 7 p.m.

McGraw 86, Otselic Valley 42
OTSELIC – The visiting McGraw Eagles tallied 30 points in the second quarter, pulling away from the host Otselic Valley Vikings on their way to the 86-42 league win to open the 2019-2020 season Tuesday night.
The Vikings were within nine points of the Eagles after the first eight minutes of play and managed to scored another 11 to give them 21 at the half. However, McGraw’s 30 points in the second gave the visiting team a large lead, cruising to the win.
OV was led by Matthew Wetterer’s 13 points – six coming from long range – and four blocks in the loss. Teammates Garrett Wood and Gavin Hazzard contributed nine and eight points respectively. Hazzard added another two made 3-pointers in the loss while Wood distributed four assists in the game.
Nicholas Stone added seven points and Levi Lyon closed out the Vikings scoring column with five points. Lane Adams led the team with four rebounds.
McGraw had four players score in double-digits for the win.
Otselic Valley (0-1) will host the Oxford Blackhawks for an inter-county, non-league matchup on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

South Kortright 76, Unadilla Valley 43
NEW BERLIN – Six players of the South Kortright Rams posted double figures in the scoring column as the visiting team topped the host Unadilla Valley Storm 76-43 Tuesday.
“South Kortright was much bigger and stronger than us,” said UV head coach Matt Osborne. “Their defense was outstanding up and down the court. We played well for a quarter but their pressure caused a lot of turnovers and easy baskets for them.”
With the score at 22-14 after the first quarter, the Rams kicked up their defensive efforts an notch, holding the Storm to 12, 10 and seven points in each of the three remaining quarters.
Unadilla Valley had a strong effort throughout the team and were led by Cameron Osborne’s 12 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Dylan Nichols also kicked in 12 points in the loss while Tim Postma and Caleb Parker each scored six points. Devon Fairchild added five.
South Kortright, who made six 3-point baskets throughout the game compared to the Storm’s zero, was led by both Seth Ashline and Chris Champlin’s game-high 13 points.
Logan Kaufman, Hunter Collins, Joe Krupa, and Charlie Kuhn each ended the night with 10 or more points.
Unadilla Valley (0-1) faces Tip-Off Tournament host Sherburne-Earlville Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
