Lady Storm can’t overcome Sidney’s second quarter in season opener loss
B-G improves to 2-0 with win over Warriors
NEW BERLIN – The Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley were held to 16 points in the first half but shook off the first game jitters to close the deficit held by the visiting Warriors of Sidney. However, the 23 point second quarter was enough for the team from Sidney to hold on for the Midstate Athletic Conference victory, winning 45-39 Wednesday night.
“After halftime, we settled down and played better defense,” said UV head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “Our bench players played very well as there were a lot of people in foul trouble for both teams.”
Paced by the balanced scoring of Meegan White over the course of the four quarters of play, Unadilla Valley chipped away at the 14 point margin held by the Lady Warriors to start the second half. The UV defense answered as well by holding Sidney to just four points.
The Storm tallied 15 points while holding the visitors to seven points in the fourth, bringing the Sidney advantage to single digits but it was as close as the home team came as they fell by six.
White led all scorers in the game with 14 points, tallying a basket in each of the four stanzas. The Storm’s senior also went 6-for-8 (75-percent) from the foul line.
Kyleigh George added seven points in the loss while Kayla Christian and Sophie Off each kicked in six points. Kadence York tallied three points for Unadilla Valley.
Sidney, who played on back-to-back nights – was led Savannah Baldwin’s led Sidney with 11 points – nine of which came from behind the 3-point line. Kaitlyn Bookhout and Emma Simmons combined for 16 points of the Warriors total (eight points each) while Hayley Larson recorded seven in the league win.
Unadilla Valley (0-1) will play another home game as they take on Edmeston at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
