Tornado place third in Stop DWI tournament

JOHNSON CITY – The Norwich boys basketball team won the second of their two games over the weekend, beating South Kortright 62-56 in Saturday’s Stop DWI Consolation at Johnson City High School.
The Purple Tornado landed in the third place game after falling to eventual champion Johnson City Friday night 85-51.
In Saturday’s game against the South Kortright Rams, Norwich’s long range game was on. As a team, the Tornado shot lights out, knocking down a total of 10 3-point field goals in the win. Tommy Flanagan led the way beyond the arc, hitting five from the outside.
Leading Norwich in the scoring column was Carson Maynard with 19 points – six coming from long distance. Maynard also had a big day at the free throw line, shooting 7-for-9 (78-percent) in the win.
The two teams were tied at the end of the first quarter at 14-14 but Norwich went into the break leading by a point.
Out of the intermission, South Kortright took the lead after outscoring the Tornado 18-11 in the third behind the eight scored by Logan Kaufman.
In the fourth, Norwich’s defense took over. Holding the Rams to eight points in the final stanza, Norwich took the lead back for good, using a 20-8 run in the eight minute span.
Flanagan hit two of his five 3-point field goals in the fourth while Maynard went 5-for-7 at the foul line.
JT Vinal, who was Norwich’s second highest scorer a night earlier, tallied four of his six points in the stanza, helping push the Tornado to the win.
Against Johnson City on Friday, Norwich trailed by six at the end of the first but the host Wildcats took over in the second by outscoring the visitors 24-15 to take a 15 point lead at the half.
Norwich scored 24 points over the next two quarters of play but Johnson City out of 43 points in the same span to earn the 34-point victory.
Flanagan was the Tornado’s leading scorer in Friday’s contest, posting 15 points in the loss. Vinal finished with 14.
The Wildcats were led by Jaden Johns’ game-high 21 points and saw Xavier Hill score 17. Dean VanFossen also reached double-digits, putting up 12 in the win.
Norwich travels to Susquehanna Valley on Monday for a Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
