Norwich’s early lead tops Sus Valley for road win

Oxford defeats Afton in MAC game

CONKLIN – The Norwich Purple Tornado boys basketball team earned their second divisional win Monday night, taking down host Susquehanna Valley 62-50.
Norwich built a seven point lead after the first quarter and continued to add to the margin, despite the strong effort from the Sabers’ Joe Waitkavicz. The Sus Valley forward finished with 22 of the team’s 50 to record a game-high in the loss.
The Purple Tornado once again made several shots from beyond the 3-point arc, sinking nine. Tommy Flanagan led the long-range shooters, hitting five for the second straight game. Flanagan finished with 17 points.
Senior guard Carson Maynard also had multiple 3-point field goals, scoring six of his team-high 19 in the game. Maynard led the Tornado in the second quarter, scoring seven of the team’s 11 points in the stanza to help Norwich maintain the lead at the break.
Out of the intermission, the Purple Tornado really caught fire from long distance, aiding in the momentum staying in the favor. Flanagan connected on three of his five 3-pointers in the frame while Maynard and Norwich youngster Torin Lawrence each hit one from behind the arc.
Lawrence finished with nine points in the road win for the Tornado. JT Vinal, one of Norwich’s leading scorers this season was held to two made free throws but helped the team out in other ways as he filled the rest of his statline.
The Tornado senior ended the game with eight rebounds, four steals, and four assists while shutting down one of Susquehanna Valley’s leading scorers Zach Taro as he held his opponent to just five points.
Norwich also had Shane Lawrence, Logan Ford and Jahlil Jones chip in four points each while Carson Thornton scored the first three points of the game with a made 3-point basket.
The Purple Tornado (3-1, 2-0) are on the road again Thursday as they travel to Windsor to face the Black Knights. Tip-off is slated for a 7:15 p.m. start.

Oxford 55, Afton 42
AFTON – Oxford’s Matt Roach tallied game-high 16 points to lead the Blackhawks to a Midstate Athletic Conference win over host Afton Friday night.
Roach went 4-for-6 from the foul line and led the Blackhawks during the 17-6 run in the third quarter, scoring six points from the floor.
Also reaching double digits in the scoring column for the visiting team were Pleasie Hughey III and Owen Marvin. Hughey tallied 12 points while Marvin kicked in 11 points for Oxford.
The Blackhawks picked up six points from Alex Smith while Dylan Kittredge and James Miceli each scored five points.
The two teams got off to a slow start in the game as the score was just 9-2 after the opening eight minutes of play but both Oxford and Afton quickly found an offense rhythm in the second as each team scored 19 before the break.
Oxford kept the momentum going after halftime with their big third quarter run to turn the seven point advantage into an 18-point lead.
The Crimson Knight cut into the lead in the final stanza, outscoring the Blackhawks 15-10 but the third quarter difference allowed Oxford to hold on for the win.
Afton’s Scott Merrill finished a team-best 14 points on the night and teammates Dylan Weeks and Collin Sadler each tallied nine points for the home team. Equan Patterson added eight.
Oxford will participate in the Ray Clement Tournament, hosted by Morris Central Schools, on Thursday. Their first game is schedule against Frankfort-Schuyler at 7 p.m.
Afton’s next contest is scheduled for Friday at Downsville at 6:30 p.m.
