NORWICH – The Purple Tornado wrestlers came away with two wins on the mat in a double header Thursday night. Norwich topped divisional opponent Susquehanna Valley 48-24 in the first dual meet of the night before taking down BGAH in a highly anticipated non-league match 31-30.
The Tornado beat the Sabers with six pins in the seven bouts wrestled in the meet.
Sus Valley started off with two forfeit wins but Norwich quickly erased the 12 point deficit with Tyler Rice and Max Morris each earning pinfall victories.
Rice needed just 26 seconds to defeat Brian Titus of SV while Morris pinned Mark Moelder at the 4:42 mark of the match.
The Sabers once again took a lead with a forfeit at 106 points but with a forfeit being awarded to Dante Geislinger at 120 pounds, the match was tied at 18-18.
The Tornado then took the lead for good when Andrew Brown earned a win 27 seconds in the first period of the 132 pound bout and teammate Nate Murphy pinned his opponent in the next match at 2:50.
Ashton Jenkins of Norwich earned a forfeit at 152 pounds before both Joey Marvin and Mikey Squires won by pins in the first period.
In the final bout of the night, Susquehanna Valley’s Hayden King topped Norwich’s Robert McIntye with 31 seconds left in third period by getting both of the Tornado wrestler’s shoulders to the mat to earn the Sabers lone win.
The second meet of the double header was for Chenango County bragging rights as the Tornado and BGAH left it all out on the mat for the inter-county matchup.
The two teams went back-and-forth throughout the meet. Norwich gained the early 9-6 lead after McIntrye earned a huge 1-0 decision win over BGAH’s Nathan Houle to start the match and Rice picked up his second pinfall win of the night, beating Dalton Griffith at the 1:40 mark of the 285 pound bout.
BGAH grabbed the early six points with a forfeit win awarded to Rocco Arduini.
Wrestling up to 106 pounds, Morris then extended Norwich’s lead to 13-6 with a 15-6 major decision win over the Bears Kenyon Pickens. However, it became a one point match when Joey Florance of BGAH was awarded a forfeit at 113 pounds.
Back-to-back wins Geislinger and Brown of the Tornado helped create some breathing room for the home team. Geislinger pinned BGAH’s Garrett Kiehle in just 16 seconds then Brown went on to pick up a 8-0 major decision to give Norwich a 23-13 advantage.
However, three straight wins for the Bears quickly erased the Norwich margin to take a 24-23 lead.
BGAH’s Dylan Decker pinned Nate Murphy with six seconds remaining in the first period of the 138 pound bout. Decker’s win was followed by back-to-back forfeits by Norwich as Brady Buttice and Brody Oleksak gained 12 points for their team.
Returning from a foot injury Thursday was Jenkins and his 6-2 decision win over BGAH’s Zach Gardepe was big for the home team. With just Squires left to wrestle for the Tornado and Norwich trailing by six, Jenkins cut the Bears lead to four points.
Squires needed to win by nothing less than a major decision to at least tie the match. However, he went on to win with a technical fall as he defeated Craig James 17-0 in the second period.
With a tech fall awarding a team five points, the Tornado pulled out the one point win.
