NEW BERLIN – According to officials from the Village of New Berlin, this year’s Spirit of Christmas event was a success this year, with over 50 families receiving free food and toys for the holidays.

According to Village of New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter, the event was held on December 21 in the New Berlin Fire Station, and was a success thanks to the collaborative efforts of local volunteers and entities like the RC Smith Foundation.

“Between the businesses and private donations, it was a great year and really tells a lot about our community as a whole,” said Potter. “As a community member I’m really proud of New Berlin and the efforts we saw that day.”

“Volunteers like Marty did an incredible job on the event, and continue to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Event Coordinator Marty Benson said this year The Spirit of Christmas event served 58 people and their families; providing families with food including noodles, peanut butter, ham, and turkey along with toys if the participants have children.

“We tried to give out as much to people as we possibly can,” said Benson. “The parents went and picked out food and toys, and I took the kids to the firetrucks and ambulances.”

“Then we put everything in black bags so that the kids can’t see the gifts inside, it’s a great event.”

Benson said the event covers numerous locations in the county including New Berlin, South New Berlin, Columbus, Pittsfield, and South Edmeston.

“There are a lot of low income people in the New Berlin area that need help around the holidays,” Benson added. “I’ve had experiences where people receive food around the holidays and then I see them months later and they’re still grateful.”

She said that the event started in the New Berlin Methodist Church, and grew to include the Village of New Berlin government and a variety of other local organizations.

She added that Father Chuck has been a driving force for the event, and that it wouldn’t be possible without the support of volunteers including Terry and Gary Potter, and all of the local contributors.

“The hardest part of it is that it’s always someone different that needs help,” said Benson. “So many people in our area need help, and it’s up to us to make a difference.”

Benson added that it’s up to local organizations in other areas of the county to stand up and make a difference in their communities as well.
