Two Afton fires in six hours send volunteer departments scrambling
AFTON – Area fire departments responded to two residential fires that occurred late Thursday night and early Friday morning, that were only a few hours apart.
Afton Fire Chief Blaine Reiling said crews responded to a trailer fire at about 11 p.m. Thursday, along County Road 17. Crews left the scene of that fire at about 2:30 a.m. and were called back out to another home fire on Algerine Street at about 5 a.m. Friday.
The first fire at 174 on County Route 17 severely damaged a mobile home and left two of the occupants with minor injuries.
When the first fire crews arrived Reiling said a room in the home was engulfed in flames. He said the room and its contents were destroyed and the damage from the fire would likely make the rest of the home unlivable.
The Coventry Fire Department was one of the first ones on the scene and, “They were the ones to put water on it first,” said Reiling. He said volunteers were on scene about 10 to 15 minutes after a 911 call was made.
Afton, Coventry, Bainbridge, Greene and Sidney Fire Departments responded, with assistance from the Chenango County Bureau of Fire.
Two occupants suffered minor injures as they evacuated the home and were transported to the hospital by Coventry EMS.
Fire crews had the fire under control within 20 minutes and were on scene for just over three hours.
“We got home, in bed, and at like 3:30 a.m. Friday morning and we got a 5:15 a.m. call for another structure fire,” said Reiling, who had three fire trucks and seven volunteer firefighters respond for Afton.
The second residential fire occurred at about 5 a.m. at 168 Algerine Street, just outside of the Village of Afton.
The Afton, Coventry, Bainbridge, and Sidney departments responded again with aid from the Harpursville and Masonville Fire Departments.
Reiling said the fire had been burning for a period of time before an emergency call was placed and when crews first arrived at the scene the home was, “fully engulfed.”
He said the single story home and a garage were destroyed.
The chief said the fire spread from the chimney at the home. No injuries were reported. Crews were on scene for about three hours.
