City of Norwich announces plans to replace lead waterlines

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Department of Public Works (DPW) announced at the common council meeting Monday night they will begin work to replace all lead water pipes throughout the city.

According to DPW Superintendent Edward Pepe, this will be a two year project with most of the replacements taking place in the summer of 2020 and 2021.

The city is recommending homeowners who have lead pipes to participate in the replacement program this year, so the city can be compensated by the state for improvements.

Officials also recommend residents who are not sure if they have lead waterlines to contact the DPW for an inspection.

The Department of Public Works can be contacted by phone at 607-334-1243.

The DPW will replace all public lead based waterlines, and all private lead based waterlines from the watergate leading up to the meter.

In relation to where the lines are located, Pepe said, “We have some records, but all of our records are on the public side. The private side, we don't have records of that.”

The DPW stated they will contract with private home owners to replace the lead piping leading from the water gate to the meter for free.
