Police investigate fatal car accident in Greene
GREENE – New York State Police are investigating the cause of a fatal accident that occurred on Monday after a vehicle crossed into another lane, went off the roadway, and rolled onto its roof before catching fire.
According to New York State Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, at approximately 9:42 a.m. on Monday troopers were dispatched to State Route 12 in Greene after a 911 caller reported an accident.
“The call came in through Chenango County 911 Services, and it was reported that the accident was just South of Chenango Sales,” said Dembinska.
Dembinksa said so far the investigation has revealed that the vehicle involved in the accident, a 2011 Nissan Rogue, was traveling on State Route 12 in the northbound direction when, “For an unknown reason, it crossed into the southbound lane, went off the roadway and subsequently rolled onto its roof before catching fire.”
Dembinska said the vehicle hit a guardrail and a privately owned cattle gate before it caught on fire.
She said troopers were on scene until 2:36 p.m., and that one lane of traffic was blocked off for several hours as emergency responders began extinguishing the fire and removing wreckage from the area.
She said the name of the person is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
“At approximately 1:53 p.m. the fire department was still assisting at the scene,” she added. “The investigation is still pending, and more information will be released at a later date.”
According to Greene Fire Chief Phil Mirabito, at 9:46 a.m. the Greene Fire Department responded to the scene of a fully involved car fire.
“Unfortunately there was nothing we could do for the victim,” said Mirabito. “With the assistance of a few other departments, we were able to get one lane of traffic open as we cleaned-up the area.”
He said both Chenango Forks and Brisben Fire Departments assisted with traffic control, and at approximately 2 p.m. the vehicle was removed and they were able to reopen the road completely.
