Police end pursuit with tire spikes, two suspects from Norwich detained

NORWICH – Two people from the Norwich area may be facing charges after failing to pull over for police Thursday, and allegedly committing a spate of felonies.

Tami Gray, 31, was charged with two counts of second-degree robbery, second-degree menacing, second-degree reckless endangerment, and second-degree burglary.

Another possible suspect is being held at the Wilson Hospital in Binghamton and has not yet been named. State troopers said the suspect will be turned over to law enforcement when he is released from the hospital and likely charged.

The pursuit began in the City of Norwich and traveled through Chenango and Broome counties, that ended when police successful deployed a tire deflation device across the roadway.

According to New York State Police Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, the incident began yesterday afternoon in the City of Norwich with a failure to comply.

Police called off the chase early Thursday but resumed a search and relocated the vehicle, beginning a second pursuit after information was received linking the vehicle to a series of crimes, including robbery and burglary.

“[The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office] found the car and started another pursuit that went into Cortland and Willet,” said Dembinska. “There are two people that have been detained and are likely going to face charges.”

According to a statement from the Norwich Police Department, the chase was called off due to the potential risk to the public, officials said the chase occurred during a high traffic time in the city, increasing the risk of injury to bystanders if the pursuit were continued.

“They drove off from the Norwich PD and New York State Police, and later on dispatch gets a complaint from an individual from the Town of Plymouth,” said Dembinska. “The individual said the two suspects had menaced and threatened a victim.”

She said an item was stolen from the victim, and after the two fled the scene the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office was able to find the vehicle.

She added that the pursuit continued into Cortland, and that a tire deflation device was successfully deployed at that time.

“One of the suspects were taken Wilson General Hospital,” said Dembinska.

Police have not yet released the second name of the individual involved in the incident, but said that more information would be released once they are taken into police custody.

This incident comes after a failure to comply lead to the apprehension of a suspect wanted on a felony warrant last Friday. The suspect led officers on an hour-long chase through parts of Chenango and Otsego County. The chase ending in Norwich after the suspect went down a one-way street and hit a tree.
