For The Health of It: HPV vaccine and cancer screenings decrease cervical cancer

CHENANGO COUNTY – More than 4,000 U.S. women die from cervical cancer every year. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide.

The cause of most cervical cancers is attributed to the human papillomavirus (HPV). 93 percent of these cancers could be prevented with the use of screening by Pap test and use of the HPV vaccine.

A recent study with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed evidence that the HPV vaccine is also reducing cervical pre-cancers. The reduction in cervical pre-cancers occurred in women who had been vaccinated, and also those who were unvaccinated, offering consideration for herd immunity in the community.

The HPV vaccine can prevent cancer with the CDC recommending all preteens have HPV vaccination when they are 11 or 12 years old for protection before being exposed to HPV. Cervical cancer screening is also recommended for women ages 21 to 65.

HPV affects both females and males and increases risks for cancers of cervix, mouth, throat, vagina and anal areas. Use of the HPV vaccine and cancer screening saves lives against cancers that were once difficult to treat and overcome. For more information, call Chenango County Public Health at (607)-337-1660.
