Lady Storm dropped third straight game

CLINTON – Entering the game nine points shy of reaching 1,000 for her illustrious career, Sherburne-Earlville junior Tessa Cole chipped away at the small total early in the first quarter.
Opening with a 3-pointer, Cole added two transition layups to put her just two points away. However, in Tessa Cole fashion, the junior Marauder used a step-back move to place her beyond the arc and drained the 3-point field goal to bring the S-E fans to a roaring ovation.
After reaching the milestone, Cole and the Marauders got down to business in order to pick up the Center State Conference 61-49 road win over the host Clinton Warriors.
The S-E junior finished with 30 points, – 15 coming from made 3-pointers in the contest – to lead all scorers.
The Marauders quickly pushed the game to a 14-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, tallying 23 points in the opening eight minutes of play.
However, the home team wasn’t going to go away easy, attempting to spoil the landmark night with several scoring runs throughout the game. Clinton also used the 23 Sherburne-Earlville turnovers to get back into the game.
At one point in the second quarter, the Warriors brought the deficit to single digits. Yet, every time Clinton brought the game close, the Marauders settled in and pushed the lead back to double figures.
S-E took a 10-point margin into the halftime break and came out of the intermission to hold on to the same lead, despite the strong effort by Clinton to inch closer. Sherburne-Earlville then outscored the Warriors 11-10 in the fourth for the 12 point win.
Elizabeth Peila contributed 11 points in the win for the Marauders and Maria Albertina added nine. Albertina was one point shy of her third straight double-double as she pulled down 12 rebounds for S-E.
Sherburne-Earlville (4-7) hosts a tough 9-2 Mount Markham team on Friday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Walton 50, Unadilla Valley 36
NEW BERLIN – The Lady Storm dropped their third straight contest Tuesday night as the visiting Walton Warriors captured the Midstate Athletic Conference win, 50-36.
A slow start by both teams saw the first quarter come to a close at 8-5 but the Warriors were able to shake off the jitters in the second to go on a 17-point scoring spurt.
Jacqlyn Gransbury, who let all scorers in the contest with 21 points, paced the Walton run but scoring 11 of the team’s points in the stanza.
Trailing by 18 at the half, the Storm needed to make adjustments in order to fight their way back into the game.
UV’s head coach Brandi Whitbeck stated she switched her team to a full-court press defense after the break in order to cause some chaos for Walton. The change in defense aided in the Storm outscoring the Warriors in the second half 29-25 but the near 20-point deficit was one her team couldn’t overcome.
“You can’t dig yourself a 20 point hole and expect to get out of it,” said Whitbeck. “Especially when you score two baskets the whole half. Our change to the press the second half caused some turnovers but it just wasn’t enough.”
Unadilla Valley fell to Unatego and Delhi last week – two teams that are currently ranked in New York State’s Top 25 Class C girls basketball teams. The Storm will travel to Deposit/Hancock, another state ranked team (number 25) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
