Greene’s 3-point shooting captures MAC win over Deposit/Hancock

UV, Oxford and Norwich all handed a loss
GREENE – A slow start between the host Trojans and the Eagles of Deposit/Hancock became a 55-40 Midstate Athletic Conference win for Greene.
The Trojans, who were led three players scoring in double figures, led 10-6 after the first quarter but put together an 18-point run in the second to take a eight point advantage into the locker room at the half.
In the quarter, Drew Erickson of the home team tallied the first five points with two made free throws and a 3-point bucket. Erickson then drained two more from beyond the arc to pace the Trojans in the stanza with 11 of the team’s points.
The Greene eighth-grader didn’t stop there. Opening the third with his fourth made 3-point field goal, Erickson jump started another run that helped the Trojans pull away for good. He finished with a game-high 18 points.
Both Evan Walters and Alec Frair also recorded double figures in the win for Greene. The two veteran Trojans spaced their scoring throughout all four quarters as Walters ended the night with 12 and Frair registered 11.
Deposit/Hancock was led by Jacob Dobromirescu’s 13 points while teammate Caleb Parker chipped in 11 in the loss.
Greene is now off for a week and will take on Afton for their first game after their long break on Friday, January 24.
Walton 65, Unadilla Valley 52
NEW BERLIN – The visiting Warriors of Walton took a 30-16 lead into the intermission and held off a fighting Unadilla Valley Storm team to capture the MAC league win on the road with a final score of 65-52.
Walton jumped out to an early 13-6 lead and built it to a 14-point margin behind three made 3-pointers in the second quarter.
Surging to mount a comeback in the third, UV’s Brock Davis tallied 10 of the home team’s points in the stanza to cut the deficit in half with just eight minutes left.
Also helping in the scoring column during the third quarter run were teammates Caleb Parker and Timmy Postma as the two combined for the other 10 points recorded by the Storm.
In the fourth, it was Parker’s turn to pace Unadilla Valley in the attempt to come from behind. Parker, who ended the night as the Storm’s leading scorer, put up 10 in the final eight minutes.
However, the strong free throw shooting down the stretch for Walton allowed the Warriors to hold on for the road victory.
Walton went nearly perfect in the closing minutes, going 10 of 11 at the foul line. With their freebies falling for points, two made 3’s as well as three buckets from inside the arc sealed the deal for the Warriors.
Dylan Jacobs of Walton ended with 19 points to lead all scorers while the team also had three other player finish with double figures.
UV’s Davis scored 15 in the loss while Postma kicked in six. Devon Fairchild also tallied seven for the Storm Wednesday night.
Unadilla Valley (2-9, 1-4) heads to Deposit/Hancock on Friday looking to end their losing streak. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
Unatego 65, Oxford 28
OXFORD – The Blackhawks kept the game against Unatego within reach midway through the second quarter as they trailed 17-16. However, a 13-0 run by the victorious Spartans pushed the visiting team ahead by 14 at the break before capturing the MAC win 65-28 Wednesday night.
Oxford put together a 12-point third quarter but Unatego’s play on both end of the floor was just too much to overcome. The 12 points after the break by the Blackhawks was all the home team scored in the remaining to quarters of play as the Spartans defense held the team without a basket in the fourth.
Unatego’s offense continued their momentum from the first half as the visitors tallied 35 after the intermission. The Spartans ended the night with balanced scoring as all but one player recorded points in the win.
Oxford was led by Alex Smith’s 12 points. Colleague Pleasie Hughey III finished the game with eight points – all coming during the big third quarter by the Blackhawks. Owen Marvin and Matt Roach kicked in four points each in the loss.
Oxford is on the road Friday against Delhi for another league contest. Tip-off is slated for 7:45 p.m.
Oneonta 68, Norwich 47
ONEONTA – The rival Yellowjackets capitalized on a tough shooting night by the Purple Tornado, earning a 67-48 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory Tuesday night.
In the always anticipated matchup between the two long-time rivals, Norwich shot just 25-percent from the field and a tough 8-for-17 at the free throw line while Oneonta finished 40-percent – including 7-for-21 from beyond the arc.
The Yellowjackets held a 18-11 advantage after the first quarter of play and built the lead to 16 before the break by holding Norwich to just eight points in the second quarter.
The Purple Tornado battled in the second half and tried to chip away at the lead held by Oneonta but Norwich tallied just 28 points in the two quarters while the Yellowjackets scored 33 to cruise to the win.
In the tough shooting night for the Tornado, Tommy Flanagan led the visiting team with 14 points – nine from behind the 3-point line – and teammate Carson Maynard ended the night with 13.
JT Vinal came away with 19 rebounds to lead all players in the stat column while the opposition’s Zyeir Lawrence pulled down 15.
Lawrence was one of three in double digits for Oneonta, scoring 17 points. Graham Wooden finished with a game-high 24 points and Alex Osterhoudt came away with 20.
Norwich (9-3) is now off for 10 days and will take the time to prepare for the second half of the league schedule. They will return from the long break with a home game against Seton Catholic on Friday January 24 at 7:45 p.m.
