Bears pin six in dual meet with Blackhawks

AFTON – Despite starting off the match down by 12 points, the Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville Bears captured the Midstate Athletic Conference divisional crossover dual meet win over the Greene/Oxford Blackhawks 46-33 Wednesday.
The Blackhawks Abram Parsons and Noah Kennedy received forfeit wins at 182 and 195 pounds to take a 12-0 lead after the first two matches.
The Bears, however, quickly took those 12 points back with pinfall wins by both Rocco Arduini and Timmy James. Arduini pinned Greene/Oxford’s Davis 33 seconds into the second period while James needed just 40 seconds to pin his opponent, Skyler Graves.
Adding Darren Florance’s forfeit at 99 pounds and Joey Florance’s 1:34 pin over the Blackhawks’ Owen Marcin, BGAH quickly took the 24 point swing into their favor and held on for the remainder of the meet.
Kaden Wakefield picked up a 5-4 decision over the Bears’ Jose Bivar to end the home teams winning streak during the meet but back-to-back pins for BGAH’s Jacob Terpstra and Dylan Decker extended the lead to 36-21 with six matches left in the meet.
Terpstra topped Gabe Gorman at 3:34 and Decker defeated the Blackhawks’ Vicky Fleury in just 20 seconds.
Brady Smith and Damien Hitt were each awarded a forfeit, cutting the lead held by the Bears down to nine points but a 39 second pin by Brody Oleksak followed by a 10-0 major decision win BGAH’s Brady Buttice put the home team ahead for good.
Carrying his momentum from his tournament win over the weekend, Greene/Oxford’s Paul Baker earned a 15-8 win over BGAH’s Zach Gardepe. Teammate Hunter Page added a 4-1 decision to end the meet with back-to-back victories for the Blackhawks.
The Bears competed in the Red Devil Invitational over the weekend and returned home with a third place finish as the team scored 153 points.
Oleksak captured his third tournament championship this season by winning the 145 pound bracket as he defeated Whitesboro’s Connor Rowlands in the finals with a 13-2 major decision. Oleksak also came away with a 3:10 pin and a close 3-2 decision over Windsor’s Dylan Wilmot.
Darren Florance, Joey Florance, Terpstra and Arduini all reached the finals but fell in the championship match to placed second in their respective weight classes. All four wrestlers were on the wrong end of a close decision in the title bout.
Other place finishers for the Bears were Buttice finishing third at 152 pounds, Jose Bivar placed fifth at 113 pounds and Decker ended in fifth at 132 pounds.
The Bears host travel to Deposit/Hancock on January 22 for another MAC crossover dual meet.
