Norwich police describe car accident that results in DWI arrest
NORWICH – A Tennessee woman is facing felony charges after allegedly fleeing from a traffic stop in the City of Norwich and crashing her vehicle; she was later charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated.
Kimberly Haines, age 49, of Springfield, Tennessee was charged with felonies including aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated.
According to Detective Sergeant Reuben Roach, at 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning Norwich Police Department officers received information from the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center that there was an erratic driver in a white pick-up truck on South Broad Street, in the vicinity of NBT Bank.
Roach said officers attempted to stop the vehicle in question and then the vehicle “sped off” north on North Broad Street.
"At one point during this pursuit, the suspect vehicle did stop, and then put the truck in reverse, in what appears to be an attempt to strike the police vehicle," said Roach.
He said the pursuit then continued northbound until the vehicle collided with a curb on North Broad Street and wrecked. He added that Norwich Police Department officers, assisted by New York State Police, were then able to take Haines into custody.
"Thankfully no one was injured in this complaint and I believe that is directly related to these officers becoming quite adept with these types of calls," said Roach.
Roach said Haines was been charged with Aggravated DWI due to the level of her blood alcohol content. He said she is also facing numerous other charges.
“In compliance with the new laws, Kimberly was released to appear at Norwich City Court at a later date,” he added.
