Morris, Squires win to give Norwich fourth victory of season

BINGHAMTON – Returning to the mat before the team attends the Section IV Division-II Dual Championships Saturday, the Norwich Purple Tornado wrestling squad defeated the Chenango Valley Warriors Tuesday night to earn the second Southern Tier Athletic Conference divisional win and their fourth of the season overall.
With just a total of three matches wrestled, the Tornado earned victories in two. Norwich picked up six forfeit wins in the match while the Warriors were awarded five.
The winner of the meet was going to be determined by the outcome of the three matches.
Max Morris, one of Norwich’s freshmen on the team, captured a 13-4 decision in the first match action of the night. Morris wrestled up a weight class from his usual 99 pound weight, defeating the Warriors’ Ethan Randis.
Tornado senior Mikey Squires need just 17 seconds to takedown CV’s Anthony Holt and putting his back to the mat for victory by pinfall.
Chenango Valley’s lone win went to Colsten Volpe at 152 pounds. Volpe topped Norwich’s Joey Marvin in an 11-5 decision.
The Purple Tornado now prepare for the dual championship, host by Chenango Forks on Saturday at 10 a.m. Norwich, the third seed of the Division-II tournament, will see Walton/Delhi in the first round. The Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville team will take on Owego at the same time.
If Norwich moves on, they will face top-seeded Windsor. If the Bears secure a first round win, they will go against No. 2 Tioga. Semifinals action is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The overall winners of the dual championship tournament will secure a spot in the New York State Championships, which is scheduled to be held on February 1 in Syracuse.
