Vehicle stolen as victim warms-up car, police seek suspect

NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man following a car theft in the Town of Norwich and are requesting the public’s assistance.

According to police, the incident took place during the morning hours of Tuesday January 21, when a car was stolen from a parking lot at Town of Norwich business.

The sheriff’s office released a photo of the suspect on social media Wednesday, which shows what appears to be white male suspect with a black beanie hat, black coat, and blue jeans.

The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office asks that if anyone has any information about the individual that they reach out to Detective Jeffrey Barton at (607) 337-1973.

Chenango County Sheriff Detective Barton reported police received a complaint of a car theft early Tuesday morning. He said the vehicle was stolen while it was running and the keys were in it.

“The victim left his car unlocked after starting it to heat it up,” said Barton. “When he came outside he saw the vehicle headed southbound.”

Police described the vehicle as a silver Maserati Levante.

The investigation is ongoing.
