Smith enters 1,000 point club in Greene’s big league win over Walton

Oxford and S-E cruise to league victories
GREENE – Entering Tuesday’s Midstate Athletic Conference game 15 points shy to reach the career milestone, Emma Smith of Greene was able to reach 1,000 points with style.
In a close game against Walton and with 1:31 left, Smith powered up a layup. As the ball went through the net, the crowd on hand broke out into loud ovation for the Lady Trojans’ forward. Smith was also fouled on the play and went to the free throw line.
Knocking down the foul shot gave Smith 1,001 points for her career and 16 for the game as Greene. The and-1 play put the Trojans up by eight with little time remaining.
Walton’s Jacqlyn Gransbury hit a shot from behind the 3-point arc to bring her team within five points but the home team prevailed, taking the 36-31 win over the visiting Warriors.
Both teams opened the game with a slow start as the score at the end of the first was 6-2, in favor of the Trojans.
Finding their offensive flow from the floor, Greene made five baskets to outscore Walton 11-10 in the second stanza to take a five point advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Out of the break, the two teams nearly matched point for point but once again, it was the Trojans who extended their lead.
In the final eight minutes of play, Smith took over for Greene offensively as she scored all nine points in the quarter. The Trojans used their edge in height as they fed Smith on the inside and she converted, leading her team to the five-point win.
Having a big third quarter for Greene was teammate Olivia Kennedy, scoring six points to help pull away from Walton in the stanza. Kennedy finished with 10 points.
Walton was led by McKenzie Clough’s 14 points and Gransbury ended the night with eight. Makara MacGibbon chipped in seven in the loss.
Greene gets set to host Harpursville for a Saturday matinee MAC matchup. The game is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start.
Oxford 53, Harpursville 40
OXFORD – The Lady Blackhawks of Oxford pulled to one game over .500 Tuesday night, taking down the Harpursville Hornets 53-40 in the league contest.
Oxford used back-to-back 18 point quarters in order to cruise to the 13-point win after a slow start saw the Blackhawks trailing by three after the opening eight minutes of play.
Three players tallied double figures for Oxford in the win as Madalyn Barrows led all scores with 16 points. Teammate Olivia Kelsey added 14 in the win while Karley Miller ended the night with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Blackhawks outscored Harpursville 36-14 in the second and third quarters. The large scoring push was in large part due to their offensive rebounds and their defense causing several turnovers.
Oxford out-rebounded the Hornets 44-24 and scored 30 points off their second and third chances in the game. The Blackhawks also caused 13 turnovers and converted at the other end to added another 10 points to the final total.
Harpursville cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter, putting up 16 points compared to Oxford’s 10 but the lead built by the Blackhawks was too much to overcome in the final eight minutes of play.
The Hornets’ Chelsea Merrill finished the game with a team-high nine points. Abby Lyon and Ghia Medovich each pulled down nine boards and tallied eight points for Harpursville.
Oxford (8-7) hosts another MAC league contest when Deposit/Hancock comes to town on Friday night. Game is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.
Sherburne-Earlville 42, Sauquoit Valley 9
SHERBURNE – The Lady Marauders of Sherburne-Earlville were able to roll to a 42-9 win over Sauqouit Valley after holding a 30-1 lead at the end of the first half.
S-E then added another 12 points in the third quarter before being held scoreless in the fourth.
Sauquoit Valley produced six of their nine team points in the fourth, finishing the game on high note. Marley Inglis led the visiting team with four points while Madison McKenney scored three and Alexa Sheppard made two free throws for her two points.
McKenney’s 3-pointer was the long field goal made for Sauquoit Valley and the other two players knocked down all but two of their foul shots in the contest.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Tessa Cole ended the night with a game-high 19 points and added three assists and five steals to her statline. Alexis James led the team in the steals column, finishing with eight and she kicked in six points and recorded seven rebounds.
Maria Albertina also pulled down seven boards in the win for the Marauders while Destinee Posey chipped in eight points. Elizabeth Pelia added seven.
Sherburne-Earlville picked up their fifth win of the season. Now at 5-10, the Marauders travel to Canastota looking for number six on Tuesday, February 4.
