Late game push sends Norwich to win over Sabers
Vikings fall to Brookfield
NORWICH – Down by as many as nine points at one point in the third quarter, the Norwich Purple Tornado needed to find a way to get back into the game against Susquehanna Valley Tuesday night.
Offensively, Norwich’s weapon of choice was Carson Maynard. Maynard, who finished with a game-high 25 points, dumped in 15 during the stanza in which the Tornado tallied 20.
The host team then went on to hold the lead for the remainder of the game, fighting off the Sabers every last ditch effort before Norwich claimed the 70-65 Southern Tier Athletic Conference win.
The defensive ammunition came in both the second and third quarters of play as many players came off the bench for the Tornado and stepped up into big roles. Norwich head coach Tom Collier said one player specifically changed the game with his play.
“Lex Genute honestly changed the outcome of the game for us,” said Collier. “His effort off the bench provided a spark for us. He may not play every game or play very many minutes for us when he does step on the floor but he gives us a huge boost when he does. He did so for us tonight and that was huge.”
Genute, a junior on the Tornado team, also provided five points in the second quarter to help Norwich take back the lead after trailing by one point at the end of the first.
The Tornado went into the locker room ahead 34-32 but Sus Valley came out in the early minutes of the third and found an offensive rhythm to take the nine-point advantage.
However, the home team wasn’t going to go away. Norwich battled back, coming away with several defensive stops that led to Maynard scoring at the other end to push the Purple Tornado ahead for good at the end of the third by two points.
Maynard and JT Vinal started off the fourth with two big buckets on the inside to extend the Tornado lead. Then a huge 3-pointer from Carson Thornton gave the momentum boost to Norwich as the gym erupted once the ball touched nothing but net on the bucket.
Going 5-for-8 in the late-game stretch, the Tornado secured the win at the free throw line. Maynard went made four of the attempts while Tommy Flanagan went 1-for-2 in the closing minutes.
Flanagan, who was hot from the behind the arc earlier in the contest, finished with 16 points – 12 coming on made 3-pointers.
Thornton kicked in nine points for Norwich while Logan Ford and Vinal each chipped in four. Jahlil Jones and Torin Lawrence each added three points in the win.
The Sabers were led by Mason McCormacks’ 19 points and two others reached double figures in the loss. Susquehanna Valley’s James Cortese tallied 11 while Matt Fiorentono ended with 13 points.
“Sus Valley always gives us a run,” said Collier after the game. “They are well coached by Mark (Ward) and they are always tough when they play Norwich. Hats off to Mark and his kids.”
The Purple Tornado (11-3) moved up in the New York State Boys Basketball Class B rankings, jumping 13 spots to land at 16 after the big win over Seton Catholic Friday, January 24. Norwich hosts Windsor on Friday for another STAC divisional game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
Brookfield 87, Otselic Valley 49
BROOKFIELD – The Otselic Valley Vikings got off to a slow start against host Brookfield Tuesday and the Beavers took full advantage, outscoring the visitors 16-7 in the first quarter. The same resulted in the fourth, allowing Brookfield to come away with the 87-49 league win over the Vikings.
Otselic Valley made a run in the middle quarters of play, scoring 33 points between the two but Brookfield’s offense was feeling it as they scored 23 and 29 in each stanza.
The Beavers had all members of the team score a point during the game and had four players score in double figures. Kodie Abrams of Brookfield led all scorers in the contest, finishing with 22 points.
Teammates Preston Crespo, Jonah Rogers and Kaden Ondrako were the other three ending the night with double digits in the scoring column. Crespo tallied 17, Rogers added 12 and Ondrako chipped in 10 points.
OV’s eighth-grader Braeden Davis paced the visitors, racking up a team-best 17 points in the loss. Garrett Wood registered 10 points while Matthew Wetterer recorded eight points and eight rebounds of the Vikings.
Otselic Valley (2-10) hosts Poland on Thursday at 7 p.m.
