Lady Storm feuds with Forks but fall in non-league contest

OV’s Kalin paces team in loss to New York Mills

NEW BERLIN – Despite trailing 19-10 after the opening quarter, the Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley found their way back into the game with Chenango Forks a few times. However, the visiting Blue Devils were able to hold on to their lead for the 55-43 league win over the Storm Wednesday night.
Meegan White of UV poured in a game-high 21 points with 12 coming from behind the 3-point arc. White paced the team through the first three quarters of the game and knocked down three of her long-range buckets in the third quarter to put her team within 13 points.
The Storm outscored Chenango Forks in the fourth quarter 13-12 behind their free throw shooting as Unadilla Valley went 6-for-8 in the stanza.
Kayla Christian went 4-of-6 at the charity stripe while Emily Hill made both of her attempts at the foul line. Christian added a 3-pointer to give the home team five in the game and tally a total of seven points for the night.
“We played pretty well,” said Storm’s head coach Brandi Whitbeck. “We got down but fought back a couple of times throughout but we just had too many turnovers.”
Claire Converse added six points in the loss while Madison Sayles, a first-year varsity player, contributed four.
Whitbeck stated that many of her players on this year’s team are young but finding their role and coming through in some tight spots.
“We are down two of our veteran starters right now so it’s giving a lot of opportunities for the girls that haven’t seen a lot of time this year,” said the UV head coach. “They are really starting to step up. It’s exciting to see the younger girls get some time and see how much they have improved.”
Chenango Forks had three players finish in double figures in the scoring column. Kaitlynn Eaton led the Blue Devils with 19 points while Sadie Zemanick scored 14 and Olivia Root recorded 12 points.
Unadilla Valley will depend on them once again when they travel to Afton Friday evening. The Storm boys and girls teams will be playing in a quad-header with the Crimson Knights. The girls will take the floor at 5 p.m.
New York Mills 63, Otselic Valley 29
NEW YORK MILLS – The Lady Vikings of Otselic Valley scored 14 in the second quarter, producing a strong offensive effort before the intermission against New York Mills Wednesday. However, the host Marauders were too much to overcome as they captured the 63-29 win.
OV’s Leah Kalin finished the game with a team-best 16 points and added two rebounds. Teammate Tori Foster added eight points, two rebounds and four steals in the loss.
Six of Foster’s points were made from behind the 3-point line, count for the two made by the Vikings in the game.
Paige Will and Emily Miller each added a basket to come away with two points for Otselic Valley.
New York Mills saw two players register double digits in the win. Jemma Jordan ended the night leading all scorers with 19 while teammate Bri Taylor contributed 14 points.
The Lady Vikings (1-9) host Madison on Friday at 6 p.m.
