Last second basket by Morris’ Goodspeed steals non-league win from Storm

OV scores big against Poland; Oxford and B-G downed by MAC foes
NEW BERLIN – With just eight seconds remaining in the Thursday night matchup, Morris’ Jake Goodspeed pulled down an offensive rebound and put the ball back through the rim to give the visiting Mustangs a one point lead over host Unadilla Valley. Unable to come away with a game-winner, UV fell in the non-league battle 56-55.
At the end of the third quarter of play, the Storm trailed by six points. It was the first time in the contest that the home UV team were behind at the conclusion of a stanza and it was the largest lead held by either team in back-and-forth clash between the neighboring towns.
Unadilla Valley went into the halftime break leading 24-22 but Morris came out of the locker room on fire, tallying 23 points in the third quarter to take the six-point advantage.
In the final quarter of play, the Storm’s Caleb Parker took control of UV’s offense. The three-year senior of Unadilla Valley went a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line and scored seven points from the field – three of them coming from behind the 3-point arc – to pace the home team and bring them back into the game.
UV was up one point before Goodspeed grabbed the ball off the glass and scored with little time left for the game-winner. Goodspeed, who was scoreless in the fourth until that last second shot, led Morris in the scoring column with 17 points.
Parker led all scorers with 26 while teammate Cameron Osborne tallied 15 – six in the first quarter to lead UV to an early edge. Osborne also pulled down 12 rebounds to finish with yet another double-double this season.
Devon Fairchild added seven in the loss and Blaine Rifanburg chipped in five.
Scott Murphy of the Mustangs also ended the night in double figures, registering 11 points in the score book. Colleague Hamiel Williams contributed nine points for Morris.
Unadilla Valley (4-11, 2-5) travels to Afton for a junior varsity-varsity quad-header with the girls teams. The Storm varsity is set to tip-off at 6:30 p.m.
Otselic Valley 73, Poland 33
OTSELIC – All seven Otselic Valley Vikings scored in their 73-33 win over Poland Thursday night, earning their third win of the season. Four of the Vikings reached double figured with Matthew Wetterer leading the way.
Wetterer recorded a double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points and pulling in 10 rebounds. Garrett Wood was just two points away from tying his teammate with 19 while Lane Adams finished with 14 and OV’s youngster Braeden Davis registered 10 points in the win.
Otselic Valley jumped out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter and showed no signs of slowing down as the second quarter tallied 23 points.
Keeping the offensive rhythm going after the intermission, the Vikings tallied 30 points in the third to lead 71-23.
In the fourth, OV scored just two points but the damage was done for the win in the first three quarters of play.
Poland outscored the Vikings in the final eight minutes 10-2.
Levi Lyon had a big night dishing the ball, finishing the game with seven assists while Wood added five. Wetterer also had a team-high in the blocks column, sending away four of Poland’s shot attempts.
Adams, Wood and Lyon all contributed on the glass too, pulling down five rebounds each.
Otselic Valley (3-10) travel to Fabius-Pompey on Saturday for a matinee showdown with the Falcons at 4 p.m.
Harpursville 57, Oxford 40
OXFORD – A big scoring second quarter by visiting Harpursville pushed the Hornets passed the host Oxford Blackhawks Wednesday night in the 57-40 Midstate Athletic Conference victory.
Harpursville went on a 19-6 run before halftime, taking a 17-point lead into the locker room. Before the Hornets’ scoring spurt, Oxford trailed by just four behind the hot 3-point shooting from senior Matt Roach.
Roach opened the Blackhawks’ scoring in the stanza with a bucket from beyond the arc then added one of two free throw attempts to tally the team’s first four points. The Oxford senior followed up with his second 3-pointer of the quarter to record seven of his 12 points in the first.
Recording a basket in the second quarter was the Blackhawks’ Dylan Conklin along with Roach’s four points to give the home team six before the break.
The Hornets’ Luke Merrill led all scorers in the game with 24 points, producing 11 of those in the large second quarter run by the visitors.
Oxford and Harpursville matched point for point in the second half of play as both team’s tallied 25 but the second quarter was what the Hornets used to pull away for good in the MAC win.
Alex Smith led Oxford with 14 points, 12 coming in the second half. James Miceli added six while Pleasie Hughey kicked in four.
Harpursville’s Dylan Hagerman finished with 10 and Slater Collins chipped in seven. Four other Hornets’ ended the contest with four.

DEPOSIT – The Bobcats hit four of their seven made 3-pointers in the first quarter to stay close with the host Eagles of Deposit/Hancock. However, after a strong first quarter, Bainbridge-Guilford’s offense stalled as the Bobcats tallied just five points before the halftime break.
The Eagles took full advantage, pulling away from B-G with their 24-point second quarter to cruise to the 77-43 Midstate Athletic Conference victory Wednesday night.
Ryan Porter of the Bobcats knocked down two 3-pointers in the first quarter while teammates Garrett Ives and Kolby Furgason also hit one from long range for 12 of Bainbridge-Guilford’s 16 points.
