1,500 sign petition to make Chenango County a gun-rights sanctuary

NORWICH – Dozens of people attended a Second Amendment meeting in Norwich Thursday night, with organizers encouraging local residents to engage their local government to have Chenango County declared a gun-rights sanctuary.

According to Chenango Libertarian Party Interim County Organization Chair Thomas D. Quiter, this event was led and organized by local activists. One of them, Joe Cirigliano, claims New York State is continuously pushing for more gun regulation of law-abiding citizens, despite already having some of the strictest gun laws in the country.

Quiter said the goal, “…is to gain momentum, raise awareness, and exercise level headed gun rights.”

“[The group] has a petition to move the county to make our county a gun sanctuary, and the plan will eventually go to the county board,” he added.

Those who are interested in learning more about the event or future gun rights activism may visit the Chenango County 2A Sanctuary facebook for additional information.

“States can rebel against federal law, and counties can rebel against their states,” he said. “We’ve seen that in places that have legalized marijuana, and it could work with this too.”

Quiter said the group had collected more than 1,500 signatures in support of the movement, and that most of the signatures were from the Norwich area – gathered in just 15 days.

He added the event was supported by political leaders as well such as Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting and Claudia Tenney. He said individuals interested in running for office were in attendance including Joseph Angelino, who is seeking election to the seat that long-time State Assemblyman Cliff Crouch currently holds. Crouch recently announced he will not be seeking re-election.

“[Cirigliano] leads Chenango's 2A movement, and with an excessively level head,” said Quiter. “He's a hero in the making, of his own making.”

“Regardless of how anyone feels about the Second Amendment, [Cirigliano] followed his beliefs, took up his cause, and brought forth participation in government single handedly.”

In a statement where Cirigliano said, “I’m challenging every town in Chenango County to hold an event this Saturday or Sunday for a two or three hour window where people can sign petitions."

“We had an event here last week in Chenango County where people could come down and sign the petitions, and we got about 100 signatures signed," he added.
