NORWICH – The Norwich Family YMCA is offering its Fun Club for children on days when Norwich, Oxford, and Greene schools are closed later this month.
According to Norwich Family YMCA Youth Development Director, Elaine Genute, the program will run February 17th to the 21st from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. right at the Norwich YMCA’s facility. The Fun Club is for children from pre-kindergarten to sixth grade.
The program allows parents to send their children to a safe and fun childcare facility during times when school isn’t in session, and requires that children bring a lunch, swim suit, and towel for daily swimming. She added that parents must pre-register for the Fun Club program by having a current application on file. The YMCA After School Programs are also available for areas including Norwich, Oxford, and Greene.
“The Fun Club program is an exciting way for the children to spend their days off from school, and special areas at the YMCA are accessible to us, including the Y pool, Kids’ Gym, bounce house and rock wall,” said Genute. “In addition to what we’d normally offer, this year we’re taking a look at our outreach opportunities as well.”
Program coordinator, Kelly Reppert, is planning a walk with the children to a local pizza restaurant and a tour of the library. “These opportunities allow us to bring the children to safe and fun places throughout the community,” Reppert said.
The Fun Club availability follows the Norwich City School District calendar. “It’s important that parents know there’s a place in the community that they can leave their children while they’re working during the school breaks,” Reppert added.
According to Genute this year’s staff members are focusing on behavioral management training to equip them with the tools needed to help the children grow socially and emotionally.
The Fun Clubs and After School programs are supported by the Child and Adult Care Food Program and licensed by the Office of Children and Family Services.
“This is one of the only programs like this in our community,” said Genute. “There is a scholarship program through the YMCA that does apply for anyone that would like to use the service but has financial constraints.”
There is full-time and part-time availability. And anyone interested in learning more about the programs may contact the YMCA’s Youth Department at (607) 336-9622 ext. 1028 for additional information.
The Norwich YMCA has several other programs available for youth including the Child Watch Program and Kids’ Gym. This year’s 50th anniversary of the Y Camp is scheduled to begin on June 29th.
