SHERBURNE – Trailing Holland Patent 52-46 with 2:15 remaining in the contest, Sherburne-Earlville’s Taylor Grzymkowski went on a 6-0 scoring run to bring his team back into the game.
With 36 seconds left, Grzymkowski’s bucket tied the game at 52-52. They were, however, the Marauders final points of the contest.
The visiting Holland Patent Golden Knights were the last to get a shot attempt off and, coming up a big way for his team, was Adam Jones draining a 3-pointer with 4.2 seconds remaining.
Jones’ buzzer beater was the game winner between S-E and Holland Patent as the Golden Knights took the 55-52 league victory on the Marauders’ senior night.
Sherburne-Earlville jumped out to a fast start on both ends of the floor as they took the early 11-5 lead after the first eight minutes of play.
The Marauders continued to hold onto the advantage heading into the halftime break, despite being outscored by Holland Patent 19-16 in the second.
Dylan Ernst of the Golden Knights paced his team in the third, scoring nine of Holland Patent’s 14 points. With 5:55 left in the quarter, the Knights tied Sherburne-Earlville at 29-29.
Over two minutes later, Holland Patent took the lead with Jones’ first made 3-pointer of the game. After a few lead changes between the two teams, the Golden Knights held the one-point margin in their favor with just eight minutes left in the contest.
The two teams went back and fourth until Holland Patent took the six point lead with 2:21 left. Six seconds later, the Marauders started their offense run and came away with three consecutive defense stops to tie the game.
Unfortunately for Sherburne-Earlville, Jones’ second made shot from behind the arc was the dagger in their hopes to knock off another team at the top of the division.
Robert Hill paced the Marauders with 17 points with eight coming in the second and two big 3-point field goals down the late-game stretch. Gabe Irwin added 13 points for S-E and three players – John Oley, Grzymkoski and Noah Posson, contributed six in the loss.
Before the start of the game, head coach Kevin Vibbard honored his six seniors for their dedication to the program over the years. The six are John Oley, Aiden Slater, Gabe Irwin, Noah Posson, Jacob Sutherland and Troy Fleming.
