Lady Blackhawks top Storm for second time this week
Bobcats and Marauders downed in conference play
OXFORD – The Lady Blackhawks jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead over the Unadilla Valley Storm in the second meeting between the two teams this week. Oxford built the lead to 22 by the end of the third quarter before coming away with the 58-35 Midstate Athletic Conference playoff victory.
Madalyn Barrows led all scorers with 16 points and rebounded yet another double-double on the season with her 10 rebounds in the contest.
Oxford also saw Caitlyn Quigley tally 15 points Karley Miller finish with 12. Senior Ellie Ryan gave the Blackhawks four scorers in double figures for the night with her 11 points.
Despite battling foul trouble throughout the game, Unadilla Valley was able to keep Oxford off the offensive glass as they allowed just nine second chance opportunities for the host Blackhawks.
However, Oxford made up the difference by finding the open player and converting the bucket to award the assist. The Blackhawks ended the night with 14 assists as team and showed with the balanced scoring throughout the team.
Another factor in Oxford’s win was the ability to knock down their shots as they shot 41-percent from the floor and went 18-for-23 from the free throw line. The Storm, on the other hand, made just eight of their 18 attempts from the charity stripe and went 13-for-48 for shots attempted in the game.
After the first quarter, Unadilla Valley settled in and nearly matched point for point as they went into the halftime break trailing by 12. Unfortunately for the Lady Storm, their offense stalled in the third and were able to put just five points on the scoreboard.
Oxford was able to jump ahead by 22 points after outscoring the UV 15-5 in the stanza. The two team matched their second quarter score 12-11 to end the game.
Keona Courtright ended the night as the Storm’s leading scorer with 11 points. Kyleigh George tallied nine points and Meegan White added six.
Oxford’s Olivia Kelsey contributed four points to close out the home team’s scoring.
Unadilla Valley (8-11, 4-7) will play Bainbridge-Guilford Tuesday while Oxford (11-8) will face Walton. Both games are scheduled for 7:15 p.m. tip-offs.
Walton 69, Bainbridge-Guilford 45
WALTON – The host Warriors defeated the Lady Bobcats of Bainbridge-Guilford Thursday night 69-45 in the in the first round of the Midstate Athletic Conference playoff tournament, despite the strong effort in the first half by B-G.
Walton took a five point advantage after the first quarter and built the deficit to nine points at the end of the second.
In the second half, the Lady Warriors outscored the Bobcats 38-23 to cruise to the win.
Macie Leizear ended the night with 20 points in the loss for B-G and teammate Taylor Parsons kicked in 11 points to give the Bobcats two scorers in the double digits.
McKenzie Clough led Walton with 22 points and registered a double-double with 12 rebounds. Clough was aided by Makara MacGibbon’s 12 points, Lauren Frank’s 11 and Grace Rhinehart’s nine points.
Bainbridge-Guilford will take on Unadilla Valley Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. for the second round of the MAC mini-tournament.
Holland Patent 62, Sherburne-Earlville 35
SHERBURNE – Led by Hayden Roberts 22 points, Anna Healy’s 15 and Hanna Corrigan’s 13, the Golden Knights of Holland Patent took control early and cruised to the 62-35 win over the host Marauders Wednesday night.
Holland Patent jumped out a 24-6 lead in the first quarter against Sherburne-Earlville as they were able to get out in transition after grabbing the defensive rebound.
S-E’s six points came on two made 3-pointers by Tessa Cole – one in the first two minutes of play and one with 15 seconds remaining in the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, the Marauders found an offensive rhythm behind Destinee Posey’s six points scored as she paced the home team to 10 points before the halftime break.
However, out of the intermission, Sherburne-Earlville’s offense nearly stalled as they tallied just seven points in the third. Holland Patent pulled further ahead with 18 points in the quarter to secure the win.
The fourth quarter saw the Marauders outscore the Golden Knights 12-8 as Cole registered eight of her team-high 18 points in the scoring spurt.
Posey led the team in rebounds, pulling down six while Cole and Elizabeth Pelia each recorded five in the loss.
S-E hosts Clinton on Friday for their final contest of the regular season. Prior to the start of the game, the seniors for the 2019-2020 roster will be recognized. Game is scheduled for 7 p.m. with senior night starting approximately 15 minutes before.
