Norwich win streak snapped after falling in exciting game with Whitney Point
WHITNEY POINT – Tied after the first quarter, Norwich and Whitney Point battled on the floor in Saturday’s afternoon contest. The Purple Tornado, however, fell behind by 13 points in the second and the host Whitney Point Eagles went into the locker room with the commanding advantage.
In the second half, the cardiac kids of the Norwich boys basketball team found a way back into the game.
The third quarter saw the Tornado outscore the Eagles 14-7 and cut the deficit in half with the final eight minutes of play remaining.
With seven seconds left, Norwich held the one point lead. Unfortunately for the Tornado, Whitney Point was able to score on their final drive to the basket and secured the 51-50 win over Norwich.
The loss snaps the six game win streak the Purple Tornado path was on and saw the regular season come to an end on Saturday.
Norwich assisted on 13 made baskets in the game and finished with eight steals on the defensive end. With just a total of eight turnovers recorded in the game, the Purple Tornado took care of the ball but were unable to put the ball in the basket.
In many games during the season, Norwich has relied on their 3-point shooting. Saturday’s contest saw the Purple Tornado shoot just 23-percent from behind the arc, making only three of their 13 attempts taken.
The Tornado made their shots when they needed to comeback in the second half, setting up the exciting finish to the finale.
Carson Maynard led Norwich with 13 points in the loss. JT Vinal and Jahlil Jones each scored 12 while Vinal finished with a double-double, adding 12 rebounds to his stat line.
Tommy Flanagan made all three of the Purple Tornado’s 3-point field goals, posting nine points and Logan Ford and Lex Genute each added a basket.
Whitney Point ended the game with just four players registering in the scorebook. Tanner Kallfelz ended the day with a game-high 18 points and teammate Levi Burns scored 17. Hunter James tallied 14 and Alfonsa Perna chipped in two points.
Norwich will now wait for the sectional seed for the Section IV Class B tournament. Seeds are scheduled to be released on February 19.
