Three Marauders finish second at Section III Championships as team places ninth
SYRACUSE – The Sherburne-Earlville Marauders sent four wrestlers to the Section III Division II Championship tournament on Saturday, held at SRC Arena on the campus of Ononadaga Community College. Of the four, three made it to the finals and all finished as runner-ups in their respective weight classes.
Morgan Lakin landed in the 160 pound championship bout after 15-0 technical fall over Camden’s Tyler Pelton and a first period pin against second-seeded Marshall Coe of South Jefferson/Sandy Creek. Lakin needed just 1:37 to take down the higher seeded wrestler and move into the finals.
Lakin then went up against Jacob Null of Dolgeville, the top seed of the bracket. Null controlled the match from the start, winning by tech fall with a score of 16-1.
At 182 pounds, S-E’s Ethen Eldred was the second seed of the weight class. With back-to-back pins at 1:21 in each of his first matches, Eldred defeated Morrisville-Eaton’s Eric Warner and Ayden Slack of Phoenix.
Taking on the number one seed of the bracket, Eldred went into the second period against South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s Anthony Rasmussen. Rasmussen, however, was able to get the Marauders’ senior down to the mat for the 4:52 pin.
Alex Thompson, last year’s 220 pound Section III champion, was looking to defend his title from a season ago. After placing first in the Class D Tournament a week earlier, Thompson secured the top seed of the bracket.
The S-E senior needed just 28 seconds to win his quarterfinals matchup against Marcellus’ Wilvon McKee and move onto the semifinals. In the next round, he defeated Mackenzie Case for the fourth time this season by a 8-3 decision.
In the finals for the third straight year, Thompson went up against Sam Sorenson of Homer. Thompson placed second in the championship bout, falling by a final of 5-1.
Also participating at the Section III tournament for the Marauders was 285 pound Colby Spavin. The senior wrestler for Sherburne-Earlville won his first round match against Hannibal’s Santana Salvador with a 4:21 pinfall. However, Spavin lost his next two matches by being pinned and ended his day early.
Eldred, Thompson and Lakin all have a chance to be selected to the New York State Championship tournament, held at the Times Union Center in Albany on February 28 and 29, by way of a wild card bid. Those receiving the nods to head to the tournament will be notified Wednesday.
Sherburne-Earlville placed ninth as a team of four wrestlers at the sectional tournament with 68.5 points.
