The ladies of the lanes: Greene/Oxford girls claim Section IV crowns in Class C

Several bowlers from Chenango County earn spot at state qualifier

VESTAL – Over the course of two days, 10 Section IV bowling teams were crowned champions in their respective classes at Midway Lanes in Vestal.
Coming away with the title for Class C was the girls’ team hailing from Greene/Oxford, topping all teams in the field with 2631 total pin count for three games. The group of five bowlers defeated the second place team from Union Springs-Port Byron by 22 pins to win the sectional championship.
Greene/Oxford’s senior Erin Howard led the team with a series score of 602, the third highest in all of Class C for the girls. Her score included a one game total of 214.
Teammate Kayli Willes rolled a three game series of 557 and was followed by the 538 from colleague Halia Tallett.
Brianna Fowlston added a 490 for the evening – including one game scoring a 216 which was the highest by any bowler on the Greene/Oxford squad – and Mikayla Trost rounded out the team’s top five with a 444.
Placing ninth in Class C was Afton-Harpursville with a final pin count of 2103. Pacing the Afton-Harpursville team was Ashlynn Caffery with a series best 494. Taylor Rutherford bowled a 456 while Destinee Thompson finished the day with a 407.
Sasha Whitney and Kassiee Mercilliot ended the night separated by 12 pins as Whitney scored 379 pins and Mercilliot rolled a 367 series total.
The Lady Storm of Unadilla Valley placed second in Class D, finishing behind powerhouse Hancock. UV collected 2518 pins as a team and were led by Paige Catena’s three-game series of 551 – the sixth highest of Section IV Class D.
Catena’s single game tally of 221 was the fifth highest of all the girls in the class. Finishing with a 203 in of her three games was teammate Pyper Kneale, who also totaled 521 pins for the match.
Gracie Oglesby was the second highest score of the Lady Storm team, rolling a 541 for the tournament. She scored a 192 for her single game high of the three games. Brynn Grant scored a 477 for UV and Anji Clark added a 428 to aid in the second place team finish for Unadilla Valley.
Rolling a 583, the fourth best in all of Class D, was Bainbridge-Guilford’s Sasha Lamoree. Lamoree’s 204 in one of the three games for the evening ended as the seventh highest single game total in the field.
The Lady Bobcats placed fourth overall in the class with Catherine Fuller’s 519 series aiding in the team total of 2402 pins. Tamela Miller ended with a 457 three-game total and teammate Mariah Olcott scored a 445. Nicole McKay recorded a 398 for B-G.
Norwich saw just two bowlers hit the lanes, finishing with a score of 712 between Andie Mucha and Gwynnie Kwasnik. Mucha registered the better of the two scores, bowling a 405 series with a 153 high game. Kwasnik scored a 307 with a 123 as her highest of the day.
On the boys’ side, Norwich placed fifth in Class B while Greene/Oxford finished seventh in Class C and Afton-Harpursville came away with 11th place. In Class D, the Unadilla Valley boys also placed second like their girls and Bainbridge-Guilford came in behind the Storm for third.
Norwich’s three game total as a team was 2430 pins with Cameron Birtch’s 645 leading the way for the Purple Tornado. Birtch’s score gave him a second place as an individual and will give him a chance to qualify for the Section IV composite team on February 21 and 22 at Valley Bowling Center in Waverly.
Teammates Kai Sheer, Dawson Robinson, Tyler Bates and Cooper Burton all finished with series tallies over 400. Sheer ended the Saturday action on the lanes with a 499 while Robinson scored a 447. Bates recorded a 427 for the three games and Burton rounded out the scoring with a 412.
Greene/Oxford’s Jakob Funnell came away with a third place overall finish individually, rolling a three-game series score of 647. Funnell’s 233 was the 11th best single game score of Class C.
Nick Flynn of the Greene/Oxford squad bowled a 570 for the second best score on the team and teammate Riley Seely was just 13 pins off with a 557.
Nick Shoemaker added a 498 to the team total of 2675 while Rob Champlain rolled a 403 to finish out the scorecard.
Afton-Harpursville was paced by Caleb Schultes’ 540 and Zach Swislowsky registered a 477. Justin Sayman was four pins way from Swislowsky with a 473, Conner Hoyt recorded a 414 and Ethan Andres’ 393 gave the team a 2297 pin total for the sectional tournament.
In Class D, UV’s Colin Grant placed third individually overall as he bowled a 649 for the championships. Grant also scored the second highest single game score with a 246.
Helping the Storm place second on the boys’ side of the tournament were Nick Guller, Will Rumovicz, Brandon Kneale and Mike Bliss. All five Unadilla Valley bowlers finished the day with games over 500 to reach the team total of 2830 pins.
Guller rolled a 568, Rumovicz scored a 554, Kneale recorded a 548 and Bliss ended with a 511.
The Bobcats bowling team tallied 2657 pins and were led by Collin Dicks 571. Joey Doyle added a 556 while John England registered a series score of 532. Thomas Lord also scored a 511 and the final spot was split between two B-G teammates. Trent Sullivan bowled two games for a 307 and Justin Dibble’s single game total was a 180.
Bowling action continues for several bowlers at the Section IV State Qualifier tournament, held at the Valley Bowling Center in Waverly on February 21 and 22.
