Seven athletes eye New York State title
ALBANY – Ethen Eldred and Alex Thompson of Sherburne-Earlville along with Noah Kennedy of the Greene/Oxford Blackhawks were awarded wild cards to the New York State Wreslting Championships, held on Friday and Saturday, February 28-29 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
The three at-large bids were announced Wednesday afternoon on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association website with the full list of participants set to take to the mats in a week.
Eldred, Thompson and Kennedy all placed second at the sectional championship tournament, earning the chance to receive a wild card in their respective weight classes.
Thompson currently holds a 29-1 record – his only loss coming in the final at the Section III Division II tournament – and will return to the state championships for the second straight year.
Eldred compiled a record of 30-4 so far this season and came away with a Class D title, like his teammate Thompson. This will be Eldred’s first trip to Albany of his career.
Kennedy returns to the New York State tournament, making his second appearance in as many seasons. The Greene/Oxford senior fell in the finals of the Section IV Division II championships by a final of 1-0, bringing him to his current record of 32-5. Kennedy also earned an at-large bid in the 2018-2019 season.
The three will join Dante Geislinger (Norwich), Brody Oleksak (Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton-Harpursville), Mikey Squires (Norwich), and Tyler Rice (Norwich) at the Times Union Center.
The four won their weight classes at the Section IV tournament, earning a guaranteed spot to the New York State Championships.
Geislinger will be looking for his third straight New York State title while Squires will attempt to avenge his loss from the finals a season ago. Oleksak also attended the championships in 2019 where he finished fifth in the 138 pound division.
Making his first appearance at the state tournament in 2018 as a freshman, Rice returns after placing fourth in Section IV a year ago.
