ITHACA – The Section IV Indoor Track and Field State Qualifier meet was held at Cornell University on Saturday, February 15. Norwich, Oxford and Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton took several of their athletes with hopes of seeing some qualify for the New York State Championship, set to be held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on March 7.
Norwich’s Miranda Cole qualified in two events, capturing a first place finish in both the 55 meter dash and the 300 meter dash.
Cole’s time in the shorter of the two races was 7.44 seconds – eight-hundreths of a second better than the runner-up from Trumansburg. The Purple Tornado sophomore stood on top of the podium in the 300 meter event with a time of 41.30, winning by five-tenths of a second.
The state qualified runner also joined teammates Angela Carlson, Emily Davis and Shaylee Horton in the 4x200 meter relay race. With a time of 1:55.30, the Lady Purple Tornado foursome placed fifth in the event.
Finishing one place ahead of them in the same event was the group from Oxford. Milla Gonzalez, Emma Barbosa, Samantha Emerson, and Trinity Vargas placed fourth, coming in behind Trumansburg, Horseheads, and Johnson City – all much larger schools than the Lady Blackhawks who only brought five athletes – at a time of 1:53.70. The group’s time set a new school record for the event with Oxford program being in just it’s second year.
Oxford’s other successes throughout the day included a medal finish by Gonzalez in the 55m dash. The Blackhawks’ sophomore finished sixth overall with a time of 7.77 seconds.
Another impressive feat was the fifth and sixth place finishes in the 300 meter dash by Oxford’s Trinity Vargas (44.70) and Emma Barbosa (44.85). Both times were personal bests for the individual runners while Vargas’ time set a new Oxford Academy record for the event.
The final athlete that the Blackhawks brought the meet was Lexi Kohlhepp, who participated in the shot put. Kohlhepp placed with a fifth overall with her best distance of three throws was 32 feet-10.25 inches.
“I’m incredibly proud of this group of girls,” said Oxford’s head coach Shannon Gawronski. “To show up with just five athletes, who all went top of Section IV, speaks to their incredible work ethic. They may be small in number, but not in spirit or in effort. They are a very close group who drive each other every day in practice, as seen by their overall placement in Ithaca.
“We have one of the fastest relay in Section IV, only behind huge schools like Corning, Horseheads and JC, is an incredible accomplishment. They worked tirelessly this season and it showed in this meet.”
Also placing in the girls shot put event was Norwich’s Shakira Alexander. The Tornado sophomore thrower launched the shot put 35 feet-1.5 inches for third place.
Fellow Norwich colleague Zach Lowe punched his ticket for the New York State Championship meet for the second time of his career. With his best toss of 50 feet-1.75 inches, Lowe placed second in the event overall.
His teammate Shayne Webster finished third in the same event, throwing a distance of 45 feet-6 inches.
Also qualifying for the state meet in March was Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton’s Ethne Degan in the 3000 meter race. The BGA eight-grader distance runner placed second in the event, coming across the finish line at 10:32.10.
BGA also saw Nate Henry, Eian Hall and Olivia Nichols win medals for their respective events. Henry placed third in the weight throw with his distance of 47 feet-7.75 inches. Hall took sixth in the boys triple jump, landing in the pit at 40 feet-6.75 inches. In the girls high jump, Nichols came away with a fourth place finish, clearing a height of 4 feet-8 inches.
The Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton girls team finished 15th overall while the boys placed 18th.
Norwich girls also saw medal winners in the 600 meter run and the 4x800 meter relay. Katie Gawronski, making her final appearance at the indoor Section IV qualifier, placed fifth in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:43.20.
Gawronski, who was sidelined with an injury for most of the indoor track season, also helped the girls 4x800 team place sixth overall. She was joined by Hannah DeBates, Robyn Diehl and Macy Montgomery as the four finished the event with a time of 11:40.36.
On the boys side of the event, Norwich’s Nolan Reid, Julian Roque, Makaio Sutton and Zander Sutton also placed sixth as they ran a time of 9:30.60.
The Lady Tornado came away with fifth place as a team while the boys placed 14th. Oxford’s team of five girls placed 16th overall.
Those athletes who qualified for the New York State Championship meet now prepare for Staten Island on March 7. Others will take a small break before starting preparations for the outdoor track and field season. Practices are scheduled to start on Monday, March 9.
