Several other county athletes place at the Section IV qualifier event
ITHACA – The Section IV Indoor Track and Field State Qualifier meet was held at Cornell University on Saturday, February 15. Norwich, Oxford and Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton took several of their athletes with hopes of seeing some qualify for the New York State Championship, set to be held at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on March 7.
Norwich’s Miranda Cole qualified in two events, capturing a first place finish in both the 55 meter dash and the 300 meter dash.
Cole’s time in the shorter of the two races was 7.44 seconds – eight-hundreths of a second better than the runner-up from Trumansburg. The Purple Tornado sophomore stood on top of the podium in the 300 meter event with a time of 41.30, winning by five-tenths of a second.
The state qualified runner also joined teammates Angela Carlson, Emily Davis and Shaylee Horton in the 4x200 meter relay race. With a time of 1:55.30, the Lady Purple Tornado foursome placed fifth in the event.
Finishing one place ahead of them in the same event was the group from Oxford. Milla Gonzalez, Emma Barbosa, Samantha Emerson, and Trinity Vargas placed fourth, coming in behind Trumansburg, Horseheads, and Johnson City – all much larger schools than the Lady Blackhawks who only brought five athletes – at a time of 1:53.70. The group’s time set a new school record for the event with Oxford program being in just it’s second year.
