Vietnam Era Veterans honored at commemoration ceremony

NORWICH – U.S. Congressman Anthony Brindisi visited Norwich Monday to recognize Vietnam era veterans.
The commemoration ceremony included speeches from Brindisi and Marine Major General Arnold Fields, followed by ceremonial pinning of each Vietnam veteran in attendance.
The ceremony was an effort to properly thank Vietnam war-era veterans for their service and welcome them home. This is usually done at the end of a war, but was never executed after Vietnam.
"We are here today to honor the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam war are the brave men and women who served during that time," said Brindisi. "Too many veterans from that conflict came home to turmoil and division in their country. Through their strength of character they took the turmoil, and transformed it into a legacy that highlights their service not just to the country, but to their fellow veterans."
During his speech, Fields said "America, for generations, has always had a tradition of thanking and honoring its veterans. Through World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Desert Storm. We did not fail to recognize our veterans and to treat them with due respect. But unfortunately we had a pause in that tradition during the Vietnam war period. We did not pay the appropriate respects, admiration, thanks, and honor to our Vietnam war period veterans that we had payed to our predecessors."
More than 30 veterans and their families were recognized with a special pin, and officially welcomed home by Major General Fields.
Brindisi also rallied in Binghamton and Utica to announce that he will be running for re-election for congress in the November 2020 election.
